United Airlines Announces Sale Date for United® Premium Plus, Airline's Premium Economy Offering

CHICAGO, Nov. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, United Airlines announced that its newest premium seating, United® Premium Plus will be on sale beginning December 3, for travel on select international flights starting March 30, 2019. The new premium economy experience will be available on 21 routes by the end of May 2019.

"United® Premium Plus gives our customers more options so they can choose the best experience that fits their wants and needs when they travel," said Andrew Nocella, United's executive vice president and chief commercial officer. "United® Premium Plus includes some of our high-end amenities from United Polaris, and is the perfect option for someone who wants an upgraded experience in the Economy cabin."

Customers traveling in United® Premium Plus will enjoy an elevated travel experience before their flight even leaves the ground, receiving complimentary standard checked bags, as well as Premier Access check-in and priority boarding. United will also offer discounted entrance at United ClubSM locations for customers traveling in United® Premium Plus.

For more images visit United's media gallery on the United Hub.

Once on board, customers will enjoy a spacious seat with more legroom, elbow room and recline than a standard Economy Plus® or Economy seat, as well as a hearty welcome meal, mid-flight snacks and a pre-arrival dining service. In addition to beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, liquor will also be complimentary in United® Premium Plus. Customers will also receive an amenity kit, a Saks Fifth Avenue blanket and plush pillow, as well as noise-reducing headphones, making it easier to enjoy hundreds of hours of entertainment on larger seatback entertainment screens. Seats will also be equipped with individual power and USB outlets, dedicated overhead bins and extra storage for customers to keep devices at hand throughout their entire flight.

United®Premium Plus Aircraft and Routes

The new premium economy seats debuted on select Boeing 777-200ER and 777-300ER aircraft earlier this summer, and United took delivery of its first 787-10 aircraft earlier this month with United Polaris business class and United® Premium Plus seats installed. All aircraft with United® Premium Plus seats also feature the airline's signature United Polaris business class direct-aisle-access seats. On average, United is adding one aircraft with United Polaris business class and United® Premium Plus seating every 10 days from now through 2020.

Awards and Upgrades
In addition to purchasing a United® Premium Plus seat, MileagePlus members will have the option to book award travel in United® Premium Plus by using their MileagePlus miles. For upgrades, either a single Global Premier Upgrade or a MileagePlus Upgrade Award can be used to move up to a United® Premium Plus seat or to United's Polaris business class cabin. Unsurprisingly, it's an exact match for the LH PE fare table (GEN = OAR), at least on the routes I checked. Believe inventory will be loaded 03-Dec for travel starting 30-Mar-19.

And so it begins. Any clues as to when they will be sold?

So much for my theory that R was going to be used for *A-wide PE awards...

Yes, and TPAC fare is matching NH, i.e UA's JV partner.

And I suspect will primarily be applicable to NH operated flights, since UA does not operate a PE cabin to, for example, SIN.

Prices are high ($771 over the W on SFO-SIN). Don't see myself biting on one of these.

Agree, and no PE fare to PEK/PVG loaded. I believe RPU will bring you from W or maybe even lower to PE since RPU earning will be capped at 4 starting next year.

Considering these are going on sale in just four days, UA really needs to update the earnings chart and clarify how upgrades will be handled.

Also awards chart.

I fear there may be no published awards / upgrade chart and it will just be the "interactive" tool. Hope that is just paranoia.

So by April, UA will be dedicating aircraft to specific routes? Wonder what routes will be getting get OAR fares? the first guess will be the 787-10 routes but where else?

30 March is for the 787-10 routes... don't know when they will change inventory to non-zero for any other routes. I hope that UA codeshares with PE get O/A/R space immediately on 3 December.

Pure speculation, but I think O/A will earn 150% and R will be either 150 or 100%. Basing this on JV partner earn rates.

it so sad how excited I am to read through it tomorrow ha! fares sfo-lhr don't look too bad from what I see, flip side biz has also been on offer sfo-lhr for a while now so that probably caps what they can charge for PE

I hope they don't use the introduction on PE awards to jack up biz at the same time because of Polaris, as that isn't even available throughout the fleet yet and they clearly made a number of soft product cuts already

That's correct. Andrew Nocella spoke at an investor conference this week and offered some insight on the Premium Plus product. Specifically that 77W and 787-10 routes will be the first to sell PP because of the assurance of actually delivering the hard product.

Premium economy; can you just give us a broad update there, that you expect to be a big contributor in 2019?

Andrew Nocella

So premium economy is a new class of service between the main cabin coach product and our business class Polaris product. Its most to kin to a domestic first class seat, but on an international wide-body jet and so we’ll sell it at a price point that’s higher than coach, but less than business class. It is not a business class seat. We don't think there will be a lot of passengers that would choose this particular seat over a flat-bed all aisle access seats. So we don't necessarily see any big buy down which is a big part of the calculation of grade in itself.

We are super excited to get it out there. Obviously there's been a lot of commentary by many about what it's worth and United doesn't have that today. So that is upside for the future. So we are excited about that. And a few of our key partners, Lufthansa, and A&A have this product. So it’s not like we have very good visibility into its potential as well, not only from commentary by the industry, but commentary from our partners.

So where we stand on that is we are retrofitting our aircraft and we have a lot of aircraft to retrofit, so you just can’t do that overnight. We started the process. All new aircraft come, delivered with the seats on board.

So our first 787-10 arrived a few weeks ago. It has this cabin onboard and it really is a great looking airplane; our customers are going to love it, and so we are going through a process that will take us through the end of 2020 to get premium plus on board most of our wide body jets. There is a small number for retirement reasons that we chose not to retrofit the aircraft. But by the end of 2020 we’ll be you know fully up to speed, which means the full value of this product will be in 2021 and the years ‘19 and ‘20 are kind of the phase-in.

Because we want to make sure when we sell this product it actually shows up in the aircraft, our passengers are getting on. We have to be really cautious not to sell it on every flight, even though we may have it on more aircrafts than you think we – we should be able to offer more flights. So they'll be a lot of cases where it's kind of a surprise. Somebody gets on board and they wind up with this better seat they didn't pay for.

So 2019, its value I think is measurable but not material. In 2020 when a lot of the fleet is done, it will be more impactful, but its 2021 the whole fleet will be done and we’ll be consistent, but the majority of it will be done. It will be consistent and consistency I think is what matters most in terms of being able to monetize the product. So that’s a 2021 good guide.

Jose Caiado

The comment about not selling as many of those seats, is that you know the situation that you are in today where you already have some aircraft in the fleet, but you are not necessarily selling that fare or is that also a kind of a 2019 and 2020 comment?

Andrew Nocella

It will be 2019 and 2020 comment. So for a fleet, the 777-300 is a good example. We’ll have all 18 of our aircrafts converted by this spring, so all 777-300 aircrafts will be selling that particular product. But our 777-200 fleet will be as much larger, it will be phasing over time and so you know we’ll probably only be able to sell one out of every two seats for 2019 on the 777 to make sure that the aircraft with the right configuration shows up at the gate I think.
