Question Confusing FLIFO - Diverted UA 390 IND-ORD 8 OCT 2018

UA 725 ORD-PHX shows:

Status: We want you to know your flight is late because of unforeseen circumstances. We value your time and we're sorry for the inconvenience. (Estimated Departure 57 Minutes Late)

Then Inbound Shows:
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800 aircraft #3502Where is this aircraft coming from? Indianapolis, IN, US (IND), Flight 390

Status: Delayed - Diverted to INDIANAPOLIS, IN, USA (IND)

even before the scheduled departure time shown (10:30 EDT).

but you can't get to UA 390 IND-ORD 8OCT by city or flight number.

Googling UA 390 seems to say it returned to gate last night past midnight? On united.com, UA 390 7OCT shows 8OCT's UA 390 (but searching UA390 8 OCT shows SAN-SFO/SFO-ORD only).

Confused....

Are you confused by the scheduled arrival/departure times? There is a timezone change — IND is Eastern, ORD is Central — if that answers the question.

Seems that the basic timeline is UA390 sched SFO-ORD yesterday diverted to IND (I assume due to weather at ORD), and then they added a recovery IND-ORD segment today. Then that airplane will be used for ORD-PHX today.

Thanks. No, I was not confused by the time zones. Just why it listed diverted before it even departed and why I could not find these flights as displayed. I also just concluded the same thing as you described.

Yes, I agree, I find the information display for diversions is almost always confusing, as there doesn't seem to be a consistent rule for what populates as origin / destination / time. Sometimes UA's site gives the easiest to understand information, sometimes flightaware is better, etc.

Seems to check out for me. Clicking "where is this aircraft coming from" shows the inbound UA390 IND-ORD with the scheduled segments times 1030 - 1035 (1h05 block time, plus the timezone switch). This is a continuation of UA390 SFO-ORD from yesterday, which diverted to IND due to weather and then the crew timed out, forcing an overnight:

Would passengers be sent to hotels for the night? That's a long wait in the terminal.

Policy says no, except for covered pax (1K, and *G/premium traveling as part of an INTL itinerary), because it wasn't an at-fault delay. I don't know what actually happened on the ground, but it was originally scheduled out around 0030 that night so I'm guessing they had to eat a bit of rolling delay before they scrubbed the crew.

It was not a great day at all for that flight, which also had to fight its way through a one-runway situation at SFO where the 1s were offline due to wind and 28R was getting used by Fleet Week aircraft interspersed with normal use. We got out into the line just after they took the 1s out of service, and boy was I glad when we turned and blew past the endless line of aircraft while taking off from 28L.
