UA to operate 6 TATL markets with 78J from EWR; increase GUM-Japan flying

Announced internally UA will operate 6 TATL routes from EWR using the 78J beginning summer 2019 routes to be loaded in the coming weeks. Also with improvements Guam will see additional Japan flying beginning April 2019.

Interesting. How does UA view the 78J in terms of lining up with the existing fleet? 772 or 764 replacement?

very cool news about GUM; it's good to see trends continuing to shift positively there.

I know of zero inside knowledge, but if I were to guess, Id say

LHR CDG FRA MUC ZRH

6th one is hard to guess cuz I feel equal chance between BRU GVA AMS.

Is the 787J supposed to have 40 seats in Polaris? Will it have PE? Seems perhaps markets like CDG, MAD, AMS, FCO, MXP etc which have big tourist demand in summer. The 77W has 60 Polaris seats and the the other pmUA 772's (except the HD version) are being upgraded to 50 Polaris seats.... Or maybe they send the 78J to London?

ZRH needs more capacity than 44J seats upfront and would have a hard time filling up the back.
78J might be too big overall for GVA - currently running on the 763.

The leaked seatmap was: 44 Polaris, 21 PE, 45 E+, and 208 Y. 78J Seat Map (leaked)

That's at the lower end of the UA widebodies for J:Y ratio, but still pretty good compared to DL or AA.

is the rumored 46J/22W/99Y 763 premium-heavy configuration still in the pipeline? if so, that would be ideal for EWR-LHR/GVA/ZRH.

Not a rumored configuration is happening and will be installed on the 14 2-cabin 763s with the CO diamond seats as well as the 3 ex HA 763s. The 763s that already have true Polaris seating will not see this configuration and will remain as is.

Surely they will replace service now flown by the 763s ( or any other 767 variation ). The 767 family is at this moment, at least for me, the only acceptable
long haul plane with a couple friendly configuration in the back compared to the other slave ships in UA's line up with the 9 and 10 across configurations.
Sad to see them go.

I think the 763's are sticking around a while as the 3 class (and I think 2 class) versions are all getting the Polaris seats and economy class will remain 2-3-2. So you should be good for at least another 5 years!

EWR-ATH seems an obvious contender.

Or maybe that's just wishful thinking!

My guesses would be:

-FRA
-BRU
-CDG
-TLV
-DUB
-BCN

The first 3 I picked because UA tends to run 772s ex-EWR on those routes, especially during the summer. TLV is within range, and I could see them adding a slight upgauge from sCO 772 (although it would decrease J seats - so who knows). The last two I picked because UA used HD 772s this summer, and maybe they think there is perhaps enough room to drive a little more revenue from upfront despite sacrificing ~50 seats in the back.

Unpopular opinion: I don't think UA uses any of these on EWR-LHR.

I wish they'd bring back the PVG-GUM route; it was cancelled just as PVG became my home airport. (Granted it twice weekly and at awful days of the week and times, but it still would beat a flight having to connect at NRT, HND, or TPE to get there...)
