New 737 MAX 8 overhead bins?

I usually fly a United 77W or 787, but had the opportunity to fly a 737-800 on Air Canada this morning. The plane had a very efficient overhead bin system that allowed the rollers to enter horizontally and then flip vertically once inside. I was amazed how many rollers they could fit in the bins. Is this something special Air Canada has done or do all the 737-800 have this setup?

I think those are Max 8's right? Doubt UA will refurbish older craft. Maybe UA's MAx 9 or 10's will have them.

All of United's new 737 MAX deliveries have Space Bins.

The Space Bins started arriving in 2016 and 16 of the existing 737 NG aircraft have them. 11 737-800s and 5 737-900ERs.

You were on a 737 MAX 8, not a 737-800. This is the newest generation of the BSI Space Bin. The prior generation, known as the Pivot Bin, had the bags laying flat; the new generation has them up on their side.

I see. Thanks for clarifying. The safety card said 737-8. I guess that means Max 8 and not 800. Hats off to the Boeing mechanical engineers. An impressive design!

Indeed, they are a nice improvement. Airbus has a similar option, the XL bins, on its single-aisle. AA will be the first customer to fly the kit; the retrofits should happen late this year or early 2019.

Good to hear all new UA deliveries will have the latest vertical bins. I think it's a 'no-brainer' retrofit. It would cut down on passengers clogging up the aisle when there's no overhead space.

In deed, few weeks back flew several different 737 MAX and all of them had the Space Bins, which was a very nice improvement...

But we still will have the DYKWIA who will put their bag in flat, the long side first.

I've only flown on the MAX once but I have to say it was amusing. The flight attendants were repeatedly telling people to put their bags on their side -- and, of course, there are instructions inside the bins -- and maybe half of the passengers were listening. So, you'd have bag-on-side, bag-on-back (like you'd do for the pivot bins or the older bins), bag-on-side, bag-on-back.. bin full. I mean, they'd stare at properly positioned bags and then put theirs in, incorrectly, right next to the correct bag. It was humorous.

But, yes, some people will still throw theirs up to take as much space as possible.

The tricky part is you can only flip it vertically once it's inside. That effort takes some wrist strength that some lack. UA should add that to the safety video for the MAX. That'll get folks trained quickly!

Perhaps that may be the case for the largest "barely fit" rollaboards. The photo with six rollaboards in a Space Bin indicates that they believe that at least some rollaboards will go in without flipping them after putting them in the wrong way (because the last one cannot go in the wrong way).

Ran into these on AA recently. I admit it took me a minute to figure it out, even with the FA saying 'insert and turn...insert and turn.' :)
