Can I downgrade a flight with UA?

Hi
I have a multiple flight booked with UA in business. As i travel one of the flights with a friend, I would like to downgrade one part from business to economy. How can I do this and is it possible?
Thanks for help.

Trade seats with your friend's seatmate once onboard.

You might come out ahead by cancelling your ticket and booking a new one in economy.

At the gate, if business class is oversold but economy is available, UA will offer money for confirmed business passengers to downgrade. That is the only other way to get money back.

That would be a ticket change and there may or may not be a refund. Easy to check.

UA is not going auction off your seat for you.

Is this a personal flight or did an employer / customer purchase the flight?

Without a lot more information, it is impossible to say whether there might be a refund and if so, for how much. So, as a starting point, call UA and ask the simple question.

As others note, you won't have a lot of trouble finding someone to swap for a free upgrade, but that, of course means no refund to you (or your employer, it the employer paid).

This is a key point. If the flight is employer-paid, downgrading and pocketing the cash could be a firing offense. It is also an IRS (or other applicable taxing agency) violation if not reported.

Any flight can be downgraded provided there's a least one seat for sale in the economy cabin. It's possible that you might have to pay to downgrade -- the change fee might be charged, and a fare difference may apply -- it's possible that the economy seat is more expensive than the first class seat was.
