Protecting your bottles with bubble wrap (at least two layers all round — buy it in rolls at Target) and packing tape is quite sufficient — no need for styrofoam or special containers. The bubble-wrapped bottles can go in a regular suitcase or a box. I have never declared any wine to United and have never had a problem or breakages. On one occasion the TSA opened one bubble-wrapped bottle to check what it was (they were) but then sealed it up again.

I have had great success with athletic socks. Perfect size, 100% track record.

For regular table wine I have found "wine in the box" an easy and safe mode to transport. The boxed product is also much lighter than heavy glass bottles and might save on checked baggage charges as well.
Selection of course is limited compared to the bottled varieties.

The fact that you’re drinking with priests or over 70
is irrelevant.

Its quite easy to pack a bottle of wine in checked luggage wrapped in clothes, if a large group just divy it out.

Why not just buy wine in Italy at half the cost and double the quality?

god bless you.

The point was to bring their local wines, as a gesture.
