UA says Passport Required for Puerto Rico

We recently booked a trip on PHX-BQN for a friend, and the itinerary says that a passport is required for the trip. I was wondering, is this a new UA-specific requirement? I never required a passport to travel to Puerto Rico.

Not sure if it's policy, but it would make sense, since diverting would mean a non-U.S. landing.

EDIT: Here's UA's policy; doesn't look like a passport is required:

Right, so be sure to bring one when you fly to ANC

Last I saw Puerto Rico was par of the USA and thus you would not need a passport, anymore then going from New York to New Jersey. The "Rules" say that a passport is a valid form of ID, but so is a driver's liscence.

But not all licenses qualify.

Actually all USA state & DC DLs do qualify for at least 2 more years.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant.
For more, REAL ID. Only presently non-complaint USA DL is American Samoa

You're kidding? That's not even close to accurate. The chance of diverting would not have anything to do with a passport requirement.

Maybe according to TSA, but not according to United.

Drivers' licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by a Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) that meets REAL ID benchmarks

I’ll make sure to pack mine when going to ABQ ;)

Come to think of it, I have seen border patrol at ELP airport, even though all of their flights are domestic...

Nowadays, you probably need to bring one, whether required or not. Sad but true.

TSA makes the rules and does the ID checks (if not traveling internationally)
And UA links to the same site referenced earlier -- so they accept the TSA policy, No conflict.

Being from an extension state, I have followed this quite closely.

Is your friend a U.S. citizen? If yes, no passport is required, no matter what UA says. UA doesn't get to make their own rules.

Where was this information given?

When I have booked an international ticket on UA I get a link to this generic page on travel documents:

https://www.united.com/web/en-US/con.../passport.aspx

no such link are on my last two domestic tickets.

According to what I understand, that would not be a fully accurate statement. Missouri for example is only good through 10/10/18 barring another extension.

Currently all state DMVs meet Real ID benchmarks even if their licenses do not because they've been given yet another extension.
