Earning UA mileage credit for Air NZ flights (Archive)

I am going to be flying on Air NZ in June in S class for my outbound and return flights, which according to the Continental site, earns 100% of the miles:

http://www.continental.com/CMS/en-US...spx?ItemId=405

However, the ticket mentions the following sentence:
"Eligible for Airpoints Dollars & Status Points accrual; no accrual of frequent flyer miles/points with airline partners".

Do you know which would override the other? Air NZ may mention that I don't earn miles, but if the fare earns miles on CO, would they be obligated to honor it?

Which route are you flying? It does make a difference.

From CO.com

+ Purchased Fare Class S is eligible for accrual only on Air New Zealand flights between New Zealand and Australia or the Pacific Islands.

D'oh! Realized I had listed the US Airways page. I guess the airfare is still good enough to warrant going to the Cook Islands, just a shame to not earn miles!

NZ - I bought tickets in wrong fare code - uuuugh

Bought tickets for the fam on NZ several months ago and am horrified to find that they are in L fare code, which I incorrectly thought qualified for PQM...which means I have spent $3500 to earn zippo. Zilch. Buying up to T would cost another 70% of the cost of the tickets and they won't wave the change fees...any advice, other than to not be quite as dumb the next time I book on *A metal?

Not much you can do - credit it to NZ's airpoints program and maybe you can use it in the future - they can be used for *A upgrades too

What does crediting to NZ have to do with using United status for luggage?

Check in using UA FF# to get star alliance luggage benefit.

Once you are at the lounge/gate, change the FF# to NZ for crediting.

Hopefully this will work.

You can change it back again, and then again at the gate the next time

that doesn't surprise me.

That does. If you really want to do this, ask again.

I suspect that this may not be worth your time and effort. You need a truck load of NZ Airpoints Dollars to get anywhere near a *A upgrade. 380 APD is the minimum for a *A upgrade and that is only for Y to J from NZ to East Coast Australia/the Pacific Islands on a carrier other than NZ - and I don't think that can actually be done at the moment. The next best is within a geographical zone (less than 2000km) Y to J at 460 APD.

A return US-AKL trip in discounted economy (L) is only going to yield 80 APD per ticket. You could pool all the APDs you earn under the Shairpoints option which may generate enough for a domestic NZ ticket next time you visit.

my experience

when this happened to me (it was some time ago)ANZ was able to find a fare code that qualified for miles but wasn't much more expensive. Did you ask what the cheapest upfare would be to earn miles?
