772

This seatmap is being used for all flights will an sUA 777-200ER scheduled. It is being used to guard against equipment swaps into one of the three possible seating configurations: legacy sUA 3-class (8F/40J and 3-3-3 in Y), 2-class Polaris (50J and 3-4-3Y), and 3-class Polaris/PE (50J/24W and 3-4-3 Y). The actual seatmap for the aircraft assigned to your flight will become available when the flight is added to the normal Flight Status display, approximately 60 hours before departure (usually overnight).

Blocks in Economy are at all 'F' seats, plus 20CH, 21BJ, 22BJ, and 35ABCDE (the last for accommodation). The blocks are designed so that, regardless of which equipment flies, no one will be moved or scrambled when the seatmap updates. Instead, some seats will unblock and some blocked seats may be deleted based on the real configuration, and then some rows may be added. This process is similar to that for the 757-300, 737-900, and other frames with uncertain configurations.

Some danger remains if there are more equipment swaps after the initial frame assignment, and the change from F/J to Polaris in the forward cabins is not a well-defined mapping.

Premium Economy, if on the plane used, would be Rows 20-22, Seats AB[ ]DEFG[ ]KL

773

Similarly, as Premium Plus is added to the existing Polaris 773s, Rows 19/20/21 seats B & K are not shown, to accommodate potential swaps between PP & non-PP equipped aircraft.

It is speculated that once PP is offered as a true separate cabin. UA will focus the PP equipped aircraft on a few selected routes to minimize the swap risk.

I'm going Basic Economy. (I know, I know...but I'll only have a carryon and even after paying to seat select I'm saving enough to make it worth it.) Anyway, at first I was getting the seat map by going in through "My Trips," which means I'd show up as BE, so I thought maybe the blocking was a sneaky way of keeping BE families of four from sitting together. But I see the same thing even when looking at the seat map when just doing a flight search, and even for other days.

Obviously, I don't actually want to sit in a middle seat, but I'm just curious as to why they'd do this. Any ideas? Surely they can't be trying to keep the center section from being too crowded, can they?
All 772 seat maps show F blocked. Not all 772's have been retrofitted to 3-4-3. Blocking F ensures if the actual plane is 3-3-3, the flight isn't very oversold.

Aha! Thanks for the quick reply. I knew somebody out there would know.

ETA: Sorry to have started a thread on this. Now that my post has been moved to the wiki, I see that I was really behind the curve! on this issue!

Almost. It’s not an oversale situation as (with P+ seats sold as economy) there are more Y seats on the Polaris/P+ plane (232 vs 221/217). It’s to minimize disruption with seat assignments if a an non-retrofit plane (3-3-3) is switched for a Polaris/P+ (3-4-3) or vice versa. If a couple chose FG and then the plane is switched to a 3-3-3 then they’d be split up.

Now that you mention that, I realize that I should have guessed what was going on, having been caught in a similar situation several years ago. My plane's old Y configuration had 2 seats at the sides, and the new one had 3 seats at the sides. When, without advance notice, my plane turned out to be the new version on the day of the flight, my B aisle seat had turned into a B center seat. Quite a few grumpy pax were berating the poor FAs, and not all could be relocated. I very politely asked to be moved if possible, waited patiently, and was rewarded with an aisle seat and a free glass of "champagne."

After last nights schedule change, for a flight about 6 weeks from now, the seat map went from interim to non-existant.
Another flight (this one domestic) that was "interim" before still says operated by 777-200 but is now showing this:

perhaps an aircraft change still in progress? Can’t see how far back that goes, but looks like a standard 737-800 to me.

Probably, downgrade to a 737, but in the past, these changes have always concluded by saturday morning.

All 772 flights (no PE, not 77G) I can find are showing as "unavailable" and my seat assignment on my upcoming flight has been blanked. I wonder if they are changing which placeholder they want to use..

Yep, I can't view the seat map on any of my booked 772 flights. I'm sure this will end well.

Might be easy to refer to https://sites.google.com/site/united...polaris-update or https://sites.google.com/site/unitedfleetsite/
as this is dynamic and the google site maintained by FT volunteers regular updates the status, include the one 77W ship in for Mod at the moment

"Real" seatmap was posted just after midnight Chicago time the day it would appear on Flight Status (about 9 hours after a tail number was actually assigned). My 6B became 6D on a Polaris seatmap; some isolated middle seats became 3A/L, 4A/L, and 12A. I believe 15 A/L are the extra two seats.

An inventory block remains on the two extra seats; pretty sure they are only available as gate upgrades. I took the liberty of snagging the unblocked 1A

Hi guys - Looking for suggestions on whether to book for 29 March or 30th March for a planned PP route (EWR-BOM on a 777-300ER).
The 29 March flight shows the interim seat map (hidden middle seats on both sides). I really want to sample this hard product and since I will only get PE as a UA Platinum, I can either book for the 30th and hope to get a cheap paid upgrade option (under $350 hopefully), or book for the 29th and select the PP seat and hope they have the aircrafts set up by then. Thoughts?

You'll almost certainly have the PP configured aircraft on the 29th.
