I disagree; OP was already upgraded, so I'd expect that the agent would preserve the upgrade.

That is definitely true, which is why it's important to be polite and accept a 'no' if it happens. You may be in the position of wanting to try again.

Opposite question:

I am waitlisted for RPU on SFO-OGG but now see R inventory available for flights that are 2 hours and 22 hours earlier than my current flight.

Can I switch to an earlier flight without paying a $200 change fee or do I have to wait for SDC window (at which point R inventory may be gone)? The current fare difference is +$140 from my original flight.

Not without extenuating circumstances (e.g., a schedule change).
