Marriott Plat Status for Matched UA Elites staring Aug 18,2018 until Jan 2019, after?
It seems that there may be a downgrade to the comp Marriott status starting in August??

The "new Gold" seems to have far less benefits??

Appears that Golds will no longer have lounge access! Also late check out at 2pm instead of 4.

IIRC there's no official confirmation on what happens post-merger, but my understanding is that current MR golds (regardless of how they obtained status) will be new "Platinums" until 2019.

There is (IMO) zero chance UA Gold will match to MR Plat in 2019.

We're all speculating beyond these known points:
- MR Gold earned through the 'native' MR program becomes MR Platinum;
- MR Gold granted by match from SPG Gold becomes MR Gold.
It has not been clarified definitively whether or not the comp'd UA-affiliated Gold status is considered MR native, although some statements have been made suggesting it is.
Nothing has been said about what will happen for the UA/MR tie-up after this year.

This will be interesting to watch. I use Marriott hotels due to the lounge access as 1K (automatic Marriott Gold), but I now have the same benefit with Hilton through Amex Platinum, so if 1K does not provide Platinum at Marriott those reservations will go to Hilton. Pity as the Renaissance at LHR and IST are same of my favourite airport hotels, but I do like the Hilton Paddington/Hilton Metropole as an alternative LHR hotel if my flight is after 10am.
My first SPG gold experience (after the merger of SPG and Marriott) was underwhelming so have avoided the SPG hotels, but if the new program upgrades the experience may reconsider.
Really hope 1K provides Platinum benefits going forward with Marriott.

Call me skeptical on 1K/GS getting platinum. They've widened the benefits gap between gold and plat and I don't think the latter is something they are going to hand out generously.

Not correct. Those who obtained MR Gold through an SPG match will not get "new" MR Plat. They will get whatever status was earned. See A3 in the wiki here: Official announcement – See how our three loyalty programs will become one in August

Hilton has been getting more of my business anyway because they have been/are treating me better internationally.
I've dropped Hyatt completely due to the massive deval for Diamonds last year.

I just finished a great stay at the Courtyard Chennai and Pune Marriott Suites. Only reason I stayed here was because of Gold benefits, and it was absolutely worth it. If UA matches to the new Gold, I’ll shift all my hotel stays to AirBnB most likely.

I will add that I started staying at Marriotts largely due to the matched Gold status via UA, and liked the program enough to switch over when Hyatt kicked me out with the 60 night requirement for "Globalist." I'll easily clear 75 combined Marriott and SPG nights this year, and of course believe the door should be closed behind me
