Please be patient with your replies - I promise I am not trying to ruffle feathers...but want to prepare myself. Son and I are flying United business, RDU-CCU-RDU in a week...and have not flown J in United before. Dont have status or miles - and flying on paid business tickets. Will the service be different because we dont have status? Thanks for sharing your opinions.

Generally speaking, no. Some crews will prioritize 1K and GS members for meal preference (this is UA policy), but otherwise there is no difference (effective or otherwise) in the service. The only potential issue is if you experience IRROPS, Premier members have access to many more resources that are not available for paid J pax.

In general no. The only possible delta on the flight will be meal choice. GS & 1Ks will have priority if a particular meal choice is oversubscribed. And while that can happen, many/most times you will get your first choice.
You will have slightly different access to lounges. With the long haul on UA, you will have access to UC and Polaris lounges throughout the system and in the long haul gateway city to some other Star Alliance lounges on departure only. The elites will have a bit more lounge access choices in some cases.

Like others mentioned, the service is no different aside from meal priority (which is not always an issue). The other difference is IRROPS handling. However, UA would generally put you in a J seat and kick out others that didn’t pay for it.

* Exception: they may do this for GS members.

Baggage allowances are a little different for intl travel. Business class pax on RDU-CCU (assuming UA J operates the intl portion) get 2 bags @ 70 lbs; a United elite pax (Gold or higher) would get 3 bags @ 70 lbs.

Bolded portion (bolding mine) is not correct. Booking in J, with first segment marketed by UA (whether or not operated by UA), and whether or not this is international or domestic segment connecting to the international one, will get the UA J allowance.
