Wiki note about the forumís several, active ďChannel 9Ē threads.

Offering live ATC communications on UA flights on Chanel 9 of the audio entertainment system (ďChannel 9Ē) is exclusive to United and offered at the Captainís discretion. This forum has four prime, active threads about Channel 9. This note will guide you to the right thread for your post, or to where you would look for those channel 9 posts youíre interested in.

1) This thread Ė intended as a basic status thread only to list the specific channel 9-equipped flights offering or not offering Channel 9. The thumbs-up/down codes used in the thread are:
Channel 9 offered on this flight but no announcement made about it.
Channel 9 offered and crew announced or promoted its availability.
: td : Channel 9 not offered on this flight.
Please postings to status reports of availability -- and use the thread below to discuss the general topic.

2) A discussion thread to pursue issues about Channel 9 availability. (See the previous paragraph. if you merely wish to list the flights offering or not offering channel 9.)
Consolidated "Channel 9 Availability" Discussion Thread [Merged]

3) A thread, to discuss interesting things heard on Channel 9, such as interesting exchanges between pilots and controllers or asking about pilot-controller phraseology. The Consolidated "Interesting Things Heard on Channel 9" Thread [Merged]

4) A thread to discuss Unitedís progress in converting legacy Continental aircraft to offer Channel 9.
Anyone get channel 9 on a reconfigured CO or PDE aircraft yet?

The following aircraft types have "From the Flight Deck" installed (commonly known as "Channel 9," as that's the location it is found on audio handset selectors):
sUA 777-200ERs
sCO 777-200ERs
sUA 777-300ERs
sUA 777-200As (high density, first class only)
sUA 767-300ERs
sCO 767-400ERs
sUA 757-200 (28J p.s.)

[sUA A320 and A319 aircraft have had it removed. It is not installed on any 737s, 787s, nor sCO 757-200s (16J p.s.) or sCO 757-300s.]

The Moderators may move misplaced posts to conform to these thread aims.

UA895 ORD-HKG 18Nov17 My wife asked the captain who said yes.

UA 896 HKG-ORD 28Nov17 Request put through a flight attendant: yes.

UA 952 ORD-MUC 30Nov17 Request put through a flight attendant who answered that the system was broken on the plane so the captain would not be able to put it on.

UA 953 MUC-ORD 05Dec17 My wife asked the captain who was extremely nice and said yes. Unfortunately, the only thing that you could hear was that telltale sound that indicates it's on but not transmitting. Then, looking at my file on United planes, I realized that we had flown the same plane last year (772 plane #2894 ) on the HKG-ORD route and the same thing happened.

My wife finds that it's way easier to request channel 9 when flying in Polaris Business as boarding occurs by the first door and frequently the captain is still in the galley. For the times we fly in Economy she would not ask a flight attendant and just hopes it's on.

Thumbs up

2/4/2018. UA208 763. IAH to EWR ch 9 was turned on after asking. Was funny, asked 3 FAís as I boarded and two said itís not avail anymore, one, had no clue what it was. I said, yes this AC has it. 2 had to come look at the screen as they didnít believe me, but after they saw it, they asked and it was turned on. I forgot how much I enjoy listening to this...I sure hope they can bring it back.

This is why I usually just ask for a cockpit tour and ask the pilots directly.

1/14/18 UA836 PVG-ORD on a 772. No. I asked a flight attendant who immediately answered that the captain would not put Channel 9 on because with social media you can tape everything. Later on, I mentioned to the captain that the part I most enjoy about flying United is the possibility to listen to Channel 9. He answered that the new planes don't have channel 9. What do I care about new planes when I still have to fly on a 772 with the 2-4-2 configuration in Business? If this 772 is a new plane (#2704), it's rather sad. And the screen was showing the availability of Channel 9.

BOS-SFO on a p.s. 752

I was one of the last to board and I happened to ask the FO on the jetbridge if Ch 9 would be on. He didn't think that the aircraft had it, but said he would check with the Captain. Never was turned on.
