Difference between W fare and Upgrade Eligible W Fare

I thought W fares were eligible for upgrades with GPUs on this route. But united.com shows differently. Any reason I shouldn't pick the lower priced fare?

Not all W fares may be upgrade/GPU eligible, but all W fares shown on UA.sux should be.

Do you mean that United W fares may not be upgrade eligible?

W fares are upgrade-eligible.

The website does this because there is a cheaper fare, less than W, on your return. Choose the cheaper W on this screen and the middle column on the second screen.

I selected the less expensive option and was able to apply a GPU to the return once the ticket was issued. So I guess the extra $100 for the "Upgrade Eligible" fare was to save me those extra clicks

Yes, it's a goofy display on the website. You wind up with the same net fare if you select W from any column. It just changes the pricing shown on the second page.

I'm pretty sure this is a display error. Remember that united.com no longer shows true one-way pricing. It's merely allocating part of the roundtrip fare to that first segment. Regardless of whether you clicked the first or second column for the outbound flight, the total fare for the RT would have been the same (assuming you booked W for both legs).

Just because this anomaly can be explained doesn't mean that it makes any sense

Yes, consolidator/bulk/etc tickets may not be upgrade eligible even if W.

In this case, I'd guess the return as a sub-W option, and the site is trying to do some goofy round trip pricing.
