CPU RPU GPU To And From SNA
I am 1K with m.m. But never able to get upgrade to or from SNA!
I do fly on my own diam. I was told SNA has highest elite in country! Any suggestions /comments? Thanks Greencal |
I could take the time to look for R inventory but instead will give this bad advice:
-Purchase F fare -Go for the buy-up offer every once and a while -Are you applying an instrument? |

This is plausible - I think more than half the people on my flight from SNA were in group 1 last year. |
I fly EWR-SNA about 10 times a year. I’m a 1k. I get upgraded maybe on 4 segments (out of 20).
group 1 on these flights are often half the plane |

I HIGHLY doubt it's anywhere near the highest elite in the country. It's my home airport and my first year as a GS was less than $40k spend.

I doubt it's anywhere near the top as well. I think more like it that SNA is home to a much more affluent community surrounding it (both home equity as well as businesses), and therefore, they spend more on airfares than the normal person. This leads to higher fares, more buy-ups, more business class tickets.
Unforunately (fortunately?) this leads to much more staunch travel plans and imo one of the easiest places to get VDB'd if you're flying SNA->SFO at the right time :P |

I will say it is plausible for a non-hub airport, but definitely not when hub airports are included. SFO is a classic example.

Also keep in mind limited FC seating. UA only seems to fly the 737-700W (with the weird E- seating ahead of the emergency exit rows) and the 737-800SFP.

There's no way SNA is more UA elite heavy than SFO, no matter how you measure. UA is third largest carrier at SNA at only 13%. WN dominates at 45%.
What SNA doesn't have is much competition on long hauls. UA, for example, is the only carrier that flies SNA-NYC nonstop, and that flight is notoriously difficult to upgrade. |

I would not be surprised if SNA was the highest number of elites on average on a seats per day basis. But I'm confident SFO and EWR are far higher on a day to day basis.

I used to live in OC 2 yrs ago and flew to and from SNA regularly as a 1K. I almost never got upgraded, even when applying instruments, except on random one-off days. So I began buying P fares and started to bite on the buy-up offers, but a lot of the F cabin was usually sold. Agree that there were a lot of elites out of SNA, especially Monday morning. The group 1 line was very long, and the overhead bins over E+ were stacked with yellow baggage handles (i.e. 1Ks). I mentioned this to one of the United Club agents at SNA once, and she commented that OC had the second highest percentage of elites after somewhere in NY (Chappaqua? can’t remember)... though I doubt she would be privy to that information, so don’t think it is reliable. |
Flew my son SNA-SFO over winter break. Put him in for GPU's both ways; the outbound cleared quickly, the return cleared a few days prior to the flight. So I'm 2 for 2 on GPU clearing relative to SNA.
