Post Passenger Opens Emergency Exit, Uses Slide To Leave Plane Parked At Gate At Newark

NEWARK (CBSNewYork) — A passenger was arrested after police say he used an emergency exit and slide to leave a plane he had just boarded while the aircraft was still parked at the gate at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Port Authority police say 25-year-old Troy Fattun is facing charges in connection with incident, which happened Sunday night on United flight that was supposed to be heading from Newark to Tampa, Florida.

Didn't think the chutes would deploy unless "armed".

Was this after main cabin door closed?

Emergency exits are different than regular exits.

So they don't disarm emergency exits? What is the point of the pin?

The news said the passenger panicked as they thought they were on the wrong plane.

Considering the article purposefully separates the "opens door" from "deploys slide", maybe it wasn't armed but he manually deployed the slide after opening.

What if there's an emergency like a fire while you're on the ground? You have to be able to exit. I'm sure emergency exists must be armed at all times that the aircraft is in use.

Actually, when parked at the gate, slides are usually not armed to my understanding. This is the entire purpose of the whole "Flight attendants, arm doors for [departure/arrival], cross check, stand by for all call" that goes on after the main cabin door is closed and/or after they're parked at the gate - they're ensuring the doors are either armed or disarmed.

While the main cabin door is open and jetbridge is either attached or someone is able to operate it if need be, it is safer to conduct an evacuation through the main doors (and arguably faster as it's more controlled). Slides can always be manually deployed after a door is opened, however.

As fastair points out, that's just for the main doors, not the emergency exits.
