Also worth noting some of these flights in Y are dirt cheap (like $400 range), so ideally not the best use of miles.

Yea, this is not really that great. A whole europe sale would have been nice.

Yes, but not this time or in the past year. Lack of availability, common issue in the last year, would make such a sale meaningless.

I find SFO-SIN coach fares around $ 579.00 r/t ( and less ) during these dates. LAX-SIN at $ 515.00. Not a particularly great value to use miles.

Not everyone lives on the West Coast. I'm sure there are some people for whom it does work well.

That is correct. Quick check EWR, ORD, IAH-SIN $ 600-650 r/t. But you are right. It might work for some people.
