New to United rewards program

Hello,

I am a recent consultant traveling out of town since April. I fly United and am at Platinum status right now and am on track to reach 1K by Thanksgiving. I read about the status carrying over to the next year. Does the year end Dec 31? What does it look like as far as PQM for the next year? Does it start all over but still maintaining your status access to upgrades? It's all clear as mud to me! Thanks for the info!

Yes, the year ends on Dec 31. You will be 1K until Jan 31, 2020. On Jan 1, 2019 the counting of PQMs starts all over again: so you have until Dec 31 2019 to accumulate the 100,000 PQMs. The only difference is that they just announced that, in 2019, you will have to spend $15,000 PQDs to reach 1K for 2020. This is an increase: this year it's still $12,000.

Yes, you can get the upgrades until January 31, 2020. Then if you requalify in 2019, you will be able to get the upgrades until January 31, 2021. Naturally, the upgrades don't clear all the time and some routes are more difficult than other routes.

PS: If your address is outside the United States, you don't need the PQDs.

Or, put another way, once you attain a certain status it's good immediately for the rest of the current year, as well as the entirety of the following calendar year.

I checked in for a United flight with our confirmation number that had both me + 1 but because the latter did not have passport info in my account, the reservation got split into two confirmation numbers. Fortunately we got to pick our E+ seats without purchase but I see trying to change it now for the +1 would incur a charge.

Is this normal behavior and does it only apply to these two segments (connecting flight) and the return trip we are still under one confirmation until changed again at check-in for the return flight?

You should be able to get E+ for free (assuming you have UA status) by calling or at the airport.

Any PNR split will affect the entire trip -- outbound and return. You're already spit for the return flight.

I have E+ myself due to the status but the +1 does not anymore. If I understand correctly, you are saying calling in will allow them to add the +1 seat to E+ for free during check in? I called United earlier to confirm and they said the +1 has lost all access and would have to charge for any seats.

HUCA. Explain that you're traveling together and your records were split, and ask for your +1 to be seated next to you in E+. It's perfectly normal to get UA to extend the E+ benefit to passengers traveling on separate reservations as long as you're on the same flights; in this case, it's even easier to defend since you were originally on a single reservation.

Gate agents are usually pretty good about fixing this -- I've flown paid E- and my companion had Silver status flying on award ticket, and they were able to get me E+ on shared segments by speaking with the gate agent.

You just need to say that you are seated in E+ and you want your companion (now) on a separate PNR to be seated with you. Don't confuse them by talking about losing E+ access or the like.

I'm sure there's a thread for voucher discussions but a quick search didn't yield one.

I booked a ticket last night for $240 using a $175 ETC. The fare dropped $40 today, while I'm still within the free cancellation window. Will an agent refund the $40 if I call, or will I need to cancel and rebook? Assuming it's the latter, how quickly do funds get returned to an ETC after a cancellation? (Booked four flights yesterday; figures the only one that dropped in price was the one toward which I used an ETC.) Thanks very much.

You can call and have it re-ticketed. A good agent should refund the difference onto your non-ETC form of payment.

Excellent; thanks very much.

EDIT: And that's exactly what happened; took about 2 minutes.

Sorry, I'm not having much luck with FT's search feature.

I know that P fares on UA will now earn 1.5x, but for partner flights (e.g. NH/AC), will continue to earn 2x, correct?

What happens for UA flights on a NH/AC codeshare, or vice versa? Are the earnings based on operating carrier, or marketing carrier?

TIA!

Do united PQM rollover from one year to the next?
I believe Delta does this.

It's a very good bet those will be reduced to 150%, though that has not yet occurred.

Accruals are based on operating carrier.

No. You start at zero January 1.
