Welcome to this thread to ask your basic, simple questions about United Airlines, its operations, or the MileagePlus program. We know that the airline is complex and we’ve created this thread for new and veteran members to ask those basic questions about United Airlines that you think must have an easy answer but just can’t find it or aren’t sure where to look.

Here's the rules from the CoC. In general I think UA is generally more flexible in these situations than they are required to be by the CoC.

Schedule Change- When a Passenger’s Ticketed flight is affected because of a Schedule Change that modifies the original departure and/or arrival time by 30 minutes or more, UA will, at its election, arrange one of the following:
- Provided that the dates of departure and arrival must be within 7 days of the originally scheduled dates of departure and arrival, respectively, transport the Passenger on its own flights, subject to availability, to the Destination, next Stopover point, or transfer point shown on its portion of the Ticket, without Stopover in the same class of service, at no additional cost to the Passenger;
- When a Schedule Change results in the cancellation of all UA service between two cities, at UA’s sole discretion, UA may reroute Passengers over the lines of one or more carriers in an equivalent class of service;
- Advise the Passenger that the value of his or her Ticket may be applied toward future travel on United within one year from the date of issue without a change or reissue fee; or
- If the Passenger is not transported as provided in C) 1) or 2) above and does not choose to apply the value of his or her Ticket toward future travel as provided in C) 3) above, the Passenger will be eligible for a refund upon request. See Rule 27 A).

Not that I'd particularly want to do this, but:
- When a Schedule Change results in the cancellation of all UA service between two cities, at UA’s sole discretion, UA may reroute Passengers over the lines of one or more carriers in an equivalent class of service;
This line from the CoC makes it seem that, in theory, they could book me on a direct CLE-BOS on B6? I suppose that would require that I am very firm that I want to connect in BOS and do not want to change my LH flight. Again, not necessarily something I want to do.

Also in this situation, it is likely easier for the UA agents to open up P availability on UA metal flights versus finding P fares on LH TATL flights.
Noted. I've done the same thing before when IRROPS have happened and have fed flight numbers to agents over the phone.

No, because they don't have an interline ticketing agreement with B6. However, they could put you onto the new DL CLE-BOS flights (unless you happen to be flying in the period in March between the UA cancellation and the DL introduction). The likelihood of finding an agent willing to do this, though, is extremely low given the number of UA/LH options.

No, United still offers service between CLE and FCO. It doesn't say "non-stop service".

Imagine United decided to permanently cancel its only EWR-TXL flight after you bought a ticket, they could route you EWR-FRA-TXL on LH or EWR-LHR-TXL on BA.

When I book a flight on United for partner flights with miles how do I know the tickets are confirmed? Right now they say ticketed. Is that what I need, I can't remember if ticketed is the final step or if i have to wait for it to say confirmed or something. When I booked with miles last time I had a hard time with a partner flight and had to call a few times to get in finalized. Also, how do I pick my seats on partner airlines? There used to be a list with the partner numbers but now I can't locate it.
Thanks for the help

If you have a ticket number (016xxx) then you "should" be confirmed. There are some partners which are worse than others about honoring this, but most of the time if it tickets you are good to go. You should be able to locate the PNRs for partner airlines on the UA PNR online, and then use those to select seats with the other airline. You can also call them and use your full ticket number -- this is also a good chance to check you are properly ticketed if you are worried.

I keep trying to read up on Mileage Plus, how many miles I earn?, How many miles I need? and so on but I just seem to go around in circles and end up completely lost. Over the years my wife and I have managed to attain about 100k each from flying from BFS/DUB-US East Coast and when I look at it now I reckon I can get about 4000 each way in BusinessFirst (Polaris) which doesn't seem like a very good earning rate to me!

So, from someone who is quite lost, my question is - I have found that there are good deals on TAP from Dublin to various US cities, for example Washington at around £1200 return in 'J' - how many UA miles would that earn?

TIA

If purchased as TAP ticket (most likely)

Class of service Award mile earnings:
(including fare class bonus) Business C, D, Z, J 125%
Figure out the distance. Then multiply by 1.25 to get the number of total miles @:-)

I had a super cheap DEN-PVG round trip mileage run (ended up doing a miles and copay upgrad both ways). I was surprised by how low the actual award mileage earnings was. I only earned 1632 miles (1020 base plus 612 bonus) for the LAX-PVG and return leg. On a G fare I thought I would get 50% of the actual miles (6,485). Is there a link that shows how award miles are calculated based on flight distance?

Award miles are based on base fare times your status multiplier, not distance flown. I assmune your PQD accruals show 204PQD and you're gold. If so, accruals are correct

It's somewhat baffling that the *S printed for so long, and especially that it toggled back and forth.

However, as far as I know, there were no cases when the *G status was not appropriately recognised by a lounge. As a backup, though, you may wish to have the in-app card handy. It should display the *G status correctly.

edit add: Just saw your second message, which says you are being assigned Group 2 when not upgraded. That suggests you may have trouble — best of luck.
Quick update on this... Went to enter TK lounge, agent asked to see BP and noted I wasn't eligible to enter based on *S, but immediately let me in when I showed the virtual card with *G. Also, *G and Group 1 have shown on all boarding passes after this flight.

Have also had great CPU rates the past few weeks. 3/4 so far, and the only one that didn't clear was hub-hub. (I fly peak times, but my current work assignment is in a mostly-liesure city).

Thanks for reporting back. ^ Did you notice if the agent scanned the BP before objecting to the *S or visually inspected only, at first? As far as I could tell the printed *S is essentially a display error, but I never did find out what is actually coded in the BP.

I'm also curious to know if you'll have the *S recur; hopefully not.

I first tried to show the Star Gold virtual card, and she didn't look at it and just asked to see the boarding pass. She scanned the boarding pass without looking at it, and said it wasn't showing me as *G and asked if she could see the *G card again. I showed her the card, she typed something into the computer, and said I was good to go.

Since that day, I've had 4 segments on 3 reservations, and Group 1 and *G have shown up on all the first time. It seems that the issue has resolved. It likely just takes the United system a day or two to fully update, although it is interesting that others have reported this as a long-term recurring issue.

She had typed in your UA info, which would allow TK to seek reimbursement from UA for your lounge visit.

Hotel points transfer bonuses?

Haven't seen any transfer bonuses from UA and search came up with one from 2014. Wondering if UA does this regularly or at all.I just need to round off the account for an award and have some Wyndham I wouldn't mind transfering, but the current ratio comes up still short. I know CX is currently doing a 50% bonus for many hotel program points transfer. It's the time of year they all should...Anyone know?
