Best way to score an upgrade EWR-Tokyo (1K)

Hi All,

I am a 1K passenger looking to book a Newark to Tokyo round trip flight for my husband and myself in the March-May timeframe. I have about 350 plus points (plus another 300 that will expire end of January). What is the best process in terms of maximizing the chances for an upgrade on economy booked tickets? We're willing to be somewhat flexible with the dates and scheduling, but would like to try to do anything we can to get into first/business. Any recommendations? Thank you!!

I have also heard that for some flights there are upgrade point deals offered soon after booking?

Your best chances are in first half of May, mid-week travel. Youll already be at a disadvantage, being behind all GSs and behind any status waitlisted in PremEconomy.

Apart from what has already been suggested, HND has [slightly] better chances than NRT.

Not sure what youre referring to. Either PZ opens or it doesnt. United hasnt been typically releasing upgrades early lately.

Looks good. No GS even waitlisted.

CPT-EWR UA1123 on Feb 1

Im in paid economy and waitlisted for both Pe And business class.

Any help would be appreciated on my chances, thanks!

United doesn't make waitlist viewable publicly until a couple days before each flight. At that time. you'll find it under "Flight Status".

Change the date on your device to the date of the flights and check the flight status on united.com and you should be able to see the waitlist. Doesn't work on the United app as far as I know.

wow, that worked amazingly!

Here us what that waitlist showed:

Jan 21: 1 out of 5 on waitlist for Polaris, 29 booked seats out of 48 total

Feb 1: 3 out of 7 on the waitlist for Polaris, 23 booked out of 48

To the uninitiated, these odds look pretty good! But please correct me if Im wrong.x thanks

For the first time that I can recall, the fare class listing on United's site isn't showing PZ or PN at all for some international flights--it skips from P to IN--even while other options for the same trip list PN and PZ, of course followed by a 0 each time. Does that mean anything other than "United IT having a Saturday"?

There have been recent reports that UA has removed PN/PZ from connecting itineraries, presumably because the values weren't right anyway.

Are you looking at a connecting flight? Try searching the flight of interest nonstop.

Yes I agree your odds are promising, if not outright good. Leisure-oriented routes like CPT tend to have fewer close-in J class bookings, which are usually made by business travelers.
