I hear you but in this case we're talking about $550 for the co pay going to PQP vs the $2K or $3k going to PQP on the upfare (or TOD if they were to do that) on this trip right now. I'm all for maximizing upgrades and upgrade opportunities and spending as little as I can and getting the most out of it- don't get me wrong. However it really depends on their overall strategy for the year, how much travel they will take, and how badly they want to be up front right now. Its all just food for thought.

Welcome to FT!, scubasteve25
There is no fixed schedule except just prior to departure. UA preference is to sell the seat either to a late purchasing customer or for a cash upgrade.
The other issue ist your placement on the waitlist, very common to be more on the waitlist than seats available.

At least one of the three of us is looking at the wrong flight. I thought we were talking about UA 101 IAH-SYD in April 1.

OP, there's hope. 13/48 isn't bad. But most business seats sell within a month or even two weeks of the flight. My guess is they may trickle out a seat here and there for upgrades between now and 2 weeks before your flight. Then they'll have a better idea of how many seats they can sell and how many should be upgraded. Also note you will see the upgrade list grow exponentially as April 1 gets closer.
Follow the trick above by changing the date on your phone and looking up the flight status. The good news is the flight will stay under "Flight Status | Recent" so you only have to change the date on your phone once, look up the flight and then it will stay there.
If you're seeing seats disappear from the seat map and the upgrade list hasn't changed then you know they are selling the seats. If people are dropping from the wait list and the booked/capacity numbers change then you know upgrades are processing.
At the end of the day, you are waitlisted and can't do anything about it unless you want to buy business class. This far out it won't help to change flights. Also, I think Wednesday is a great day for the upgrade. You have a good shot IMO.
My TPAC flight last week was booked 16/60 until T-36h when they popped 26 or so off the list and ran a big upgrade sweep. The list had 39 total. Ultimately everyone got upgraded including most of the non-revs who listed. No clue why it took them so long to upgrade anyone as the cabin was clearly not selling. It was Chinese New Years Day.
Happy traveling.

when
i mean if it's 30 seats open around 3 days before your flight you're sitting pretty.
they can list in whatever cabin they want whenever they want.
and if they're positive j they can book it whenever they want.
nsra used to appear 24hrs with the old system where only pax checked in show up on the upgrade list, but new system has upgrades days before and without checkin.
nsra are such a moot point in this matter however.

Was economy cabin oversold? I noticed that upgrades were not cleared when economy cabin was oversold. Before CNY, economy cabin are oversold for USA-China but the other way after CNY. This year, everyone rushed to get back from China due to fear of C-virus. Every cabin was full. I could not get my upgrade cleared for PVG-SFO as 1K with discount economy fare (T).

Ok so I'm flying to Hawaii next month I guess. Haven't ever played the upgrade game on the Hawaii routes. How hard are upgrades to Hawaii? Particularly LAX-KOA on a 753 and OGG-SFO on a 738?
