Looking at R-space on UA45/B788 2 weeks out:
it is J9C8D6Z6P5, 14 seats open on seat map, load 28/36 (per cablepick) ??
is UA overbooking Polaris?

UA45 originates in ZRH, which is another major connection hub for *A. I'm willing to bet that UA gambles and overbooks J in this instance as well... maybe by 1. Worst case scenario, they offer someone $1500 in UA funny munny to take a seat in the back or move to a different flight in J.

I have some GPU's that I want to put to good use before they expire in Jan 2019. I am 1K and am wondering what would be the best way to redeem for a long weekend on EWR - BOM after October 27, when the new Polaris goes into service.
Should I focus on the weekdays? Maybe Tuesdays or Wednesdays?
Should I wait till there is R space available to buy the ticket, if I have that option?
Any other strategy I should use to snag a Polaris both inbound and outbound?

Pull it back. I've flown LAX-ORD once on Sat/Sun roundtrip. Silvers/CC holders were getting upgraded on Sat.

Looking pretty good here.... don't think 9 people with higher status will book on Monday and take that R space away... though I've seen crazier things happen.

Just curious, I am looking at a flight from SFO-TLV for upgrade with miles and co-pay. I looked at cablepick and only 11/60 are booked. 6 weeks out. I think I will clear but is it unusual that it is waitlisted with 49 seats still available? I guess no PN though. Thanks!

Not unusual at all. Six weeks out that's a pretty good chance, but not guaranteed.

Thanks. Do the upgrades usually only happen within a week of the flight or could it happen anytime? This is only my second time doing this. Seems worthwhile for $600 plus 35K miles. I have flown business with GPUs but those either cleared at booking or were quite full flights and cleared only at the last minute.

The nice thing about miles and co-pay is there's no loss if you miss (unlike buying up to a W to use a GPU that fails).

Agreed. I have bought W for a GPU but only when R was available. I had a friend who was GS and he upgraded me all the time. Those were the days. I also inherited his status then for waitlist purposes. I don't think that happens anymore.
Anyway, I really like the seats on 777-300ER and the SFO-TLV route is going back to the 787 in October so thought it would be worth it to splurge one last time.

Have flight IAH - SYD, K class, for Nov 15 with return SYD - IAH, Nov 22nd (thanksgiving); platinum status. Used miles + copay for both directions. Return cleared at booking, which wasn't surprising given only 6/48 were booked. On outbound, 16/48 booked and waitlisted for upgrade. I've heard this route has been pretty light loads so was hopeful would be better routing (from/to EWR), that I booked vs. LAX or SFO connect. How good do you feel chances are?
