If the transfer time is short enough, UA sees it as a connection and the instrument will apply to the entire trip. This only works if you're transiting different hubs -- LAX-NRT-EWR would work but LAX-NRT-LAX would not.

OP said he had 2-3 hours in Tokyo. That's short enough to trigger this behavior.

On Jan 2, was able to book 5 people in saver Y (XN) and confirm upgrades to C (PN) for all 5, on the same day as booking. This is for UA 57 (EWR-CDG) on Mar 7. This is part of a broader IAH-EWR-CDG-FRA-IAH itinerary March 7/8 to 11, all booked in saver Y. IAH-EWR on Mar 7 is waitlisted for all 5, while FRA-IAH on Mar 11 has already cleared for 1 of the 5 (who is a GS; the other 4 are still waitlisted, but I have high hopes all 4 will clear).

How much was your W fare? ANA has a sale ex-YVR in P class, confirmed business on NH or UA segments for about US$2K plus a $120 r/t fare LA-YVR on another airline - if you're in your 24hr cancel period and paid more than 1,500, you might want to look into this option.

Actually, it looks like that fare was pulled from the GDSes, probably yesterday when the UA fare was pulled.

It was $525 one way. I bought a Z fare for the return. I was tipped off to the $2K R/T via Canada, but for timing reasons I didn't want to backtrack. I got such a good W fare one way that I decided to keep it simple and go nonstop. Plus, I felt like I won the GPU lottery! I spent a total of about $250 more for the privilege, but could not risk a mix-connect bouncing around the West Coast.

4 GPUs cleared for me and my family into biz. I was still a 1K then and my wife Plat. Booked in late November when I used the instrument and the upgrade cleared a week out just after Christmas.

GPU applied and cleared at T-8

1. ICN-SFO
2. 01/11/2018
3. M
4. Y-C
5. Ticket was purchased on 01/09/2018
6. Upgrade cleared at T-8

This upgrade was one of the better ones I've seen clear, personally, and it wasn't even for me! My 26 year old sister and her seven month old daughter are flying back to Chicago, from Taegu, KR. Her route is TAE-ICN-SFO-ORD. They are booked in Y on all three legs, and they each have their own seat. She landed at ICN at 8:00 AM local time, and is scheduled to depart ICN at 6:05 PM today. I got a text from my mom (who is in Chicago) stating that my sister has a question about UA, and wanted to know if I could help. (My sister is a novice traveler, but flew a round trip ICN/ORD last year in C, and earned herself premier Gold.) My sister wanted my mom to see if she had enough miles to upgrade herself to business class on her ICN-SFO leg. I assumed that my sister did not have enough miles, and even if she did, I was even more confident that there was no way she could upgrade herself in the middle of her itinerary. (Perhaps I'm wrong about this?)

Anyhow, I got my sister’s confirmation number and logged into my MP account to see if I could apply a GPU from my account, however it said that the legs are not eligible for an online upgrade. I proceeded to call the 1K desk, explained the situation, and low and behold, the 1K agent was able to move my sister and my niece from Y to C. Unfortunately there wasn’t space on the SFO-ORD leg, but certainly a good use of two of my GPU’s!
