And that delay is causing my delay from NRT - EWR on UA78 on 6/26 -- was told the issue was an expired fire extinguisher - ugh....

Looks like yesterday's UA79 EWR-NRT was diverted to HND.

the narita airport website has this banner

To our customers in Terminal1

The distribution of sleeping bags, drinking water and crackers has now ceased.
If you have not received any of these items, please go to the Information Center.

NRT-DEN ended up being canceled (since DEN-NRT diverted to HND)... hopefully you're not spending the night in the airport

so in sum due to weather at NRT:
out of the inbound flights on 6/27 (departed the US 6/26):
UA79 EWR-NRT, UA143 DEN-NRT, UA803 IAD-NRT all diverted to HND
UA803 then continued on about 1h30 later into NRT arriving 4 hours late; later that evening the 77W from EWR and the 788 from DEN both ferried empty HND-NRT as UA2792 and 2794 respectively.
UA7 IAH-NRT and UA32 LAX-NRT arrived on time, UA837 SFO-NRT delayed 1h30, UA881 ORD-NRT delayed 2h and UA903 HNL-NRT delayed 4h30 due to aircraft maintenance (of course).

and out of the NRT departures on 6/27:
UA838 NRT-SFO, UA142 NRT-DEN cancelled due to weather
UA804 NRT-IAD delayed 5 hours and diverting to SFO to recrew
UA882 NRT-ORD and UA902 NRT-HNL delayed 2 hours due to weather/late inbound
and NRT-LAX/IAH/EWR all delayed about an hour due to weather

also two extra sectors scheduled on 6/28 UA2817 NRT-SFO and UA2818 NRT-DEN.

in other news DL's NRT-ATL also cancelled since the inbound ATL-NRT had to divert to HND, and NH NRT-JFK delayed 6 hours due to weather but eventually made it out. AZ also had FCO-NRT divert to HND and cancelled NRT-FCO so that makes 4 widebodies' worth of pax stuck in T1.

Why is the weather so much worse at NRT than HND?

Not sure exactly, but they are about 50 miles apart, so weather conditions can be quite different over the distance. Also, NRT can have pretty strong winds, which I think don't happen so much at HND?

Perhaps they were removing ice that was no longer in that state. I was once involved in a delay due to "fish". The ice they'd been packed in had melted, the fish were rotten and the hold was a huge puddle of rotten-fishy smelling water that had once been ice. I was happy they delayed the fight for some mopping up.

Any difference in the maximum runway length? Does HND have an easier approach path than NRT?

NRT has one runway that is slightly longer than the longest runway at HND, but I'd imagine the key factor as previously mentioned as the distance between the two airports resulting in different weather conditions, and also HND has a pair of crosswind runways.

Not sure if approach paths matter, seems like typical NRT approach is in from the Pacific Ocean and the typical HND approach is from Tokyo Bay.

NRT only has runways in one, same direction. When the cross winds are too strong to land, that's it.
HND has runways in different directions. Winds can be just as strong, but there should be at least one runway direction usable for landing.
