United Airlines adds the South Pacific's Most Stunning Tropical Paradise to its Growing List of New Routes

Tahiti becomes the 13th international route announced by the airline in 2017
United's new nonstop flight from SFO to Tahiti connects customers to beautiful beaches, overwater bungalows, coral atolls and forested volcanoes

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 13, 2017 -- United Airlines (UAL), the leading carrier in the San Francisco Bay Area, today announced it will begin service between San Francisco and Pape'ete, the capital of Tahiti, the South Pacific's gateway to more than 118 islands in French Polynesia including Bora Bora, Moorea, the Marquesas and Raiatea. United is the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service to Tahiti from the mainland United States. Tickets are now available for purchase.

"We are excited to announce Tahiti as our 13th new international route this year, and we are even more thrilled about offering our customers a whole new world of vacation opportunities," said Patrick Quayle, United's vice president of International Network. United's Long History Connecting Customers to the Pacific Islands
United's love affair with the Pacific islands started more than 70 years ago and continues today. It began in 1947 with United's first flight across the Pacific from San Francisco to Honolulu, making the Hawaiian Islands an easily accessible destination for tourism and business. Today, United offers more flights between the mainland and the Hawaiian Islands than any other U.S. carrier.

In 1968, United expanded its Pacific network linking the Hawaiian Islands, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Guam. Today, nearly half a century later, United's Island Hopper - Flight 155 - departs Guam in the morning and makes a series of five, one-hour flights to the islands of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae; Kwajalein and Majuro. In addition to the airline's popular Island Hopper service, United connects customers from Guam to other island destinations including Palau, Yap and the Philippines.

In 1986, United began nonstop service from its West Coast hubs in the U.S. to Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. Today, United is the largest U.S. carrier to serve Australia, offering the most seats to Sydney and Melbourne with its daily nonstop service from San Francisco and Los Angeles.Building its powerful Pacific network, last year United began nonstop service from San Francisco to Auckland, New Zealand, becoming the largest mainland U.S. carrier to serve the City of Sails.

United's San Francisco Hub
United and United Express operate more than 250 daily flights between San Francisco and 90 destinations throughout North America, Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. Beginning in June 2018, United will start nonstop seasonal summer service between San Francisco and Zurich.

Did you end up booking through LAX? There is still no availability listed past March. I'm heading over there late July and trying to figure ito what route to take. *A award miles just might not be in the cards...

Many other reasons also someone would pay that much; maybe someone else is paying on a J only policy, maybe you simply have to be there. If nobody in that camp bites at the $9k price, they'll drop it eventually or upgrade an elite.
They're only offering an "F' fare now... 15K+ on a r/t

It’s a winter seasonal flight, not a summer one.

High season is April/May-October. That's an interesting decision if they're only having the flight offseason.

I was skeptical of this, but a google search confirms that the best time to visit Tahiti is May through October.

Perhaps UA can only spare the aircraft in the winter.

Maybe the flight is geared to N.A. folks taking a winter break.

From what I understand the 787 is coming from ZRH route ending for the winter season.

Yeah, I wonder if "high season" is driven more by Southern Hemisphere tourism there.

We're booked later in November. If anyone on this list is still reading, I'd love to have reports on how these flights are catered in business. I figure the SFO-PPT will be normal dinner service, and am guessing that the second meal will be a snack ro some sort. The return leaves very late in the evening, so I wonder if they'll attempt to service dinner (as the reservation says) at almost midnight.

We're booked in Nov. too, and don't have a super-long connection window at SFO (inbound from ORD). Would love to hear gate & boarding info... and anything else relevant, tbh. Let us know, FT brothers and sisters!

I don't see why they wouldn't serve dinner. I've been on SFO-AKl (1045pm) and PVG-SFO (12am,) and both served dinner.

We're also doing ORD-SFO and chose the 8:00am ORD departure to give us INTL lie-flat seats on that leg and to have some time in the Polaris lounge at SFO as a bonus.

The first flight (tomorrow) is currently showing Gate 94, which is toward the head of the INTL terminal. Easy connection, all airside - if you're reasonable walkers probably about 10-12 minutes from the farthest domestic gate.

You mean all airside, not landside, right?

Yes - hanging my FT head in shame. All airside - a bit of a walk but well sign-posted.

Just looking up the PPT lounge situation. It looks like the option is the "PPT Port Authorize Lounge on the mezzanine, i think post-security. It is a contract lounge used by ANZ.

United.com shows "no clubs found".

Thanks, we're on the 9:05am out of O'Hare. But this should work fine (assuming no ORD outbound shenanigans), as we're better-than-reasonable speed walkers. If all goes right, we might even get 30-40 minutes in the Polaris.
