United Airlines adds the South Pacific's Most Stunning Tropical Paradise to its Growing List of New Routes

Tahiti becomes the 13th international route announced by the airline in 2017
United's new nonstop flight from SFO to Tahiti connects customers to beautiful beaches, overwater bungalows, coral atolls and forested volcanoes

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 13, 2017 -- United Airlines (UAL), the leading carrier in the San Francisco Bay Area, today announced it will begin service between San Francisco and Pape'ete, the capital of Tahiti, the South Pacific's gateway to more than 118 islands in French Polynesia including Bora Bora, Moorea, the Marquesas and Raiatea. "We are excited to announce Tahiti as our 13th new international route this year, and we are even more thrilled about offering our customers a whole new world of vacation opportunities," said Patrick Quayle, United's vice president of International Network. United's Long History Connecting Customers to the Pacific Islands
United's love affair with the Pacific islands started more than 70 years ago and continues today. It began in 1947 with United's first flight across the Pacific from San Francisco to Honolulu, making the Hawaiian Islands an easily accessible destination for tourism and business. Today, United offers more flights between the mainland and the Hawaiian Islands than any other U.S. carrier.

In 1968, United expanded its Pacific network linking the Hawaiian Islands, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Guam. Today, nearly half a century later, United's Island Hopper - Flight 155 - departs Guam in the morning and makes a series of five, one-hour flights to the islands of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae; Kwajalein and Majuro. In addition to the airline's popular Island Hopper service, United connects customers from Guam to other island destinations including Palau, Yap and the Philippines.

In 1986, United began nonstop service from its West Coast hubs in the U.S. to Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. Today, United is the largest U.S. carrier to serve Australia, offering the most seats to Sydney and Melbourne with its daily nonstop service from San Francisco and Los Angeles.Building its powerful Pacific network, last year United began nonstop service from San Francisco to Auckland, New Zealand, becoming the largest mainland U.S. carrier to serve the City of Sails.

Assuming that there are seats available in F on SFO-ORD, call and ask UA to put you onto the earlier flight. You don't need P. This falls under the schedule change policy (flight time changed by more than 30 minutes) and you should be able to be rebooked into positive space.

What do you mean by 'if it will be possible'?

You can book a ticket for flights 330 days out if that's your question.

The flight is currently offered October 30 through March 28, and UA has made no announcement they're expanding it, so the likely answer is that you will have to find another way to get to PPT.

Sorry to be unclear. I know about the 330 day booking window. Just don’t know about whether they will have announced their plans by the time I want to book (September 2018]. Thanks. I’ll just book thru LAX if United hasn’t announced and opened their booking window.

Papeete to San Francisco - business

My partner and i are flying this route in January for our honeymoon. I understand it’s a relatively new United route. We booked economy plus although when I log in to the United website it gives me the option of upgrading for 597 USD per person to business.

Wondering if people think it’s worth it. I’ve never flown United business class (live in nz so 80 percent of travel is Air New Zealand) but 600 usd (800 nzd) for an upgrade for an overnight 8 hour flight seems pretty good.

Welcome thoughts.

Yes it's a very good price. I believe you would get your economy plus fee back.

I'd do it, and wouldn't need a honeymoon for a reason.....

It's basically an extra ~$70 per hour for a lie flat bed on an overnight flight (PPT-SFO is overnight, SFO-PPT is daytime). I think that's worth it. Plus, it is your honeymoon so I would personally splurge for the better experience. Congrats!

The United 787 is one of the better business class setups for people traveling together. In particular for a night flight $600 for the upgrade is definitely worth it (assuming splurging $1200 on a night of slight comfort doesn’t have material impact on other things you want to do, obviously. If you have to choose between this and several nights of nicer hotels, or paying off debt or something ...).

I'm booked in Y, S bucket on the inaugural flight from SFO to PPT on Oct 30th... been watching for the cost to U/G since I booked it last March... been NO availability up until today... almost rolled out of my chair when this popped up today as it became available:

$7,148 / person SFO to PPT 8 hr 40 mn Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner United Polaris business

This is a ONE WAY 8 hour flight.... how do they come up with that?

There are literally two seats left up front. The last seats in J routinely sell for prices that high -- indeed a new ticket would be $9,250 outright. If I had a net worth of ~$100M I would have no problem paying that to go to Tahiti if that's what fit my schedule; it's still orders of magnitude cheaper than flying private at that stage length.

Many other reasons also someone would pay that much; maybe someone else is paying on a J only policy, maybe you simply have to be there. If nobody in that camp bites at the $9k price, they'll drop it eventually or upgrade an elite.
