My p.s. flight is coming from... Guantanamo Bay?

So I'm on the 935pm p.s. flight tonight from EWR to SFO. In the app, I clicked the "Where is this aircraft coming from" button and was surprised to see an empty space for the airport name, but an airport code listed. I thought it was a bug and clicked it again to see the previous flight before that one, and both the origin and destination were blank, but there were airport codes.

Having never seen this before, I Google'd the airport codes. Was surprised to see that my beloved fancy 757-200 p.s. plane was flown to Guantanamo Bay, then Hunter Airforce Base in Savannah, GA then finally back to EWR.

Is this a charter flight by the government? Weird. Even had United flight numbers.

Or is United expanding it's US service to include trips to Guantanamo Bay in p.s. lol

Both flights show up on flightaware though, oddly, the dates don't make any sense.

Kinda figured, but I guess I was surprised to see flight numbers and info in the system. I would have assumed charter flights would be managed in a more secretive way or something...

There's even some seats on the seat map showing reserved (probably not ironic that it's about 14 people, or enough to fill almost all of BusinessFirst only).

If there was the need for secrecy I doubt they would be chartering that "mission"/flight through a commercial airline.

SOP, see 747 Charter spottings. The 752 is much smaller but UA has used many different aircraft over the years for military charters.

two weeks ago I was golfing at Andrews AFB on the South Course, which means that for a large part of your round, you're watching aircraft land or take off. I was surprised to see a UA 738 (or 73W) land and then later depart.

Flight to gitmo are NBD, all of the US majors have done them other than SWA, along with plenty of smaller carriers. No need for secrecy about the flight occurring.

How would United operate a revenue flight without a United flight number?

Guantanamo bay work fits right in with United's level of customer service.
