I'm in the same boat. If it's an 016 ticket you really have to check-in at the airport for legs that originate on NH.

I also would check-in at the UA transfer desk at NRT (right at the bottom of the escalator from transit security) even if NH issues you a UA boarding pass in HKG...always a safe bet to do that when traveling into the U.S. IMHO.

Try the online ANA check-in within about 15 hours before departure time and you might be able to do it. See my report: post #6 in OLCI for NH segments booked by UA as code-share?

I flew HKG-NRT on ANA a few weeks ago. NH812. Great service. I've flown this many times.

I was able to check in enough via ANA to change my seat but that's all. Make sure you use the international tab on the website; it defaults to domestic. The process would not fully complete. ANA check in agents use UA app to determine luggage eligibility but then also reference NH rules for Star Gold. They don't know how to apply the rules well.

Definitely reprint BPs in NRT to get precheck and boarding group on your BP. (NH may show group in small print as zone but I'm not sure all match up exactly.)

I read something last week about how you will be able to check-in to partner flights from the UA app at some point (soon?), doesn't sound like it works yet.

That's only if your first flight is UA metal and so you'd check in with UA anyway. The deal is that with the mentioned partner airlines you get mobile boarding passes for use with the other airlines (OAL).

But it wont work for OAL to UA connections.

My return on Monday on a 016 res. starts with ANA and then shifts to UA and everything I have received says check in with ANA the UA site won’t allow an ANA check in if it’s the first leg.

Am on UA78 right now and have a couple of observations about this:

1. I tried to get a UA stock boarding pass at the transfer counter, but it was crowded and I was "bounced" from the line when the woman saw I had a "perfectly fine" ANA boarding pass (issued in BKK when I checked in for NH806 and UA78)
2. If I had to guess, about 50 percent of the pax waiting to boarding UA78 had NH stock boarding passes
3. On a somewhat unrelated note, the new security interview questions at NRT were pretty basic. Who packed your bags, etc. UA employees (not the intense, specially trained behavioral detection specialist ICTS employees that UA contracts out of Europe) were conducting them and you could tell they thought the exercise was pretty silly (which it was)

Check in on the ANA site on the International tab. Use your UA record locator. Middle initial gets added to your first name. Johnq Public. Georgew Bush. Williamj Clinton. This must be within 24 hours and then you may be able to select a seat. Final check-in fails but the seat assignment sticks.

Next time you can "lose" your boarding pass for UA78 somewhere en route.
