Why doesn't UA have a Sunday Red Eye LAS-EWR

It came as surprise to me that UA's last direct flight on a Sunday during football season LAS-EWR is 2:03pm. Anyone have any idea why. I'm looking at Dec. 17th. I have a hard time believing there isn't enough demand. Jet Blue has 2 to JFK, Delta & Virgin America each have one. Even Spirit has one into EWR.

Well - you have to have an available plane - so you fly one out on a red-eye, that means no potential plane in the morning. You have to take into account the plane flying into LAS on a Sunday, probably not much demand. Also have to take into account ticket prices (they seem low, as low as $250 one-way)

Lots of 1-stop options that give you a full day in LAS - another reason for UA to not consider a red-eye.

It is more complicated than demand

Doesn't it also have to do with slots into EWR? Your points are probably much more relevant, but I also don't think airlines are free to just dream up any old schedule when EWR falls into the mix.

Slot control ended a year ago at EWR (I think)

That is correct. EWR is no longer slot-controlled.

I could see more people wanting to fly on Monday morning (myself included). I wouldn't want to have to check out of a hotel at Noon and then be stuck without a room until 8-10pm. Probably not going to work anyways Monday morning after being in Vegas and on a red-eye.

What, you want a return flight? What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!

Maybe they are trying to do a public service by sparing people from seeing their colleagues freshly back from a Vegas weekend with bleary eyes on a Monday morning!

Also, even if EWR is not slot controlled, it sure is gate-limited...

It's not about demand or loads, it is about PRASM. In order to run the extra service, OP either needs to buy or lease an extra aircraft or it needs to cut some other service somewhere else.

UA runs the numbers every day. If there were a better utilization on a LAS-EWR redeye, there would be a flight.

AA & DL have service, so fly one of them if it is more convenient.

Wow that is odd. I've taken that Sunday red-eye from LAS-EWR a few times, always nice to arrive just in time for work on Monday after a weekend in Vegas. Maybe some NYC employers were asking for it to be discontinued! :

There’s redeye to ORD, connect to LGA in addition to EWR, practically every hour. Perhaps not ideal but if you want to fly UA.

It's the time of year. I flew this route last Sunday, departing at 4:09pm, and there was a redeye leaving later in the evening.

That is what I'm on.

In November, they only run a Sunday redeye the weekend after Thanksgiving. Not enough degenerates wanting to make it to work on Monday I guess

that period between thanksgiving and christmas is the absolute lowest demand period of the year. United (and others) seem to cut back during that time of year. I see it back into the schedule in January / february, most other periods.
