How are there so many 1K? PQD Impossible!

Hello,

I just booked a $1400 ticket round trip Prem Economy class to Bangkok on Eva.

I just realized I will earn ZERO PQD!! My fault entirely.American and Delta offer fairly extensive PQD earnings for Premium Economy Class fares so I had no idea these flights literally will not count for status. Seems pretty ridiculous and takes all the fun out of it since United.com doesn't price even close to the competitor website and I did not see a Premium Economy. So this begs the questions, with on United tickets earning PQD, how do so many people achieve 1K!?

Did you book it through UA on 016 ticket stock? If you don't do that, for non-UA operated flights, you don't earn PDQ. There are extensive threads about this and whether and on what airlines it's worth booking through UA in terms of price etc.

By flying CPH-FRA-YVR-SFO instead of the SK nonstop, which can't be plated 016

How do i book Premium Economy on the UA website ? Of course tis not 016. Major issue in my opinion with the program.

I report to someone who travels 6-8 times in business class round trip across the Pacific each year. He pays about $3,500-3,800 (possibly more) each round trip.
Even on the low side, that's approximately $17,000-$18,000 PQDs. He's been 1K since I started working for him years ago.

A lot of the people I chat with when I'm sitting in First or Polaris seem to be of this type- people who primarily travel in premium classes for business travel.
Or, they buy more expensive upgradeable economy tickets, hence more PQD.
It's hardly impossible to achieve 1K, imo

Many of us live abroad so the PQD requirement isn't necessary.

Last minute travel ain’t cheap

I have paid $14,000 for a RT ticket to Asia before, my Coworker paid $17,000 for a RT ticket to Oman.

When your boss calls and wakes you up on a Tuesday and expects you to be in Kuala Lumpur 44 hours later ready to work, it costs MONEY.

I might be wrong, but it seems you can't issue BR ticket with 016 stock.

Odd. I'm pretty sure UA and BR have an interline agreement, but you're right that BR fares cannot be plated 016, with the exception of full fare.

Wow seriously? The same alliance without interlining agreements? That's a very bad move.

To OP,

You may not get the PQDs, but BR is much better flying experience than UA. The seats are much more comfortable than the UA slimline seats. You would love every second to be in the plane with BR.

... Some of us grind it out the really hard way.
Iíll be requalified for next year by the first week in October, and Iíve done 0 international miles this year ... 100% domestic. Itís awful earning it, a few PQMs at a time.. EWR-CMH-EWR. EWR-ATL-EWR. EWR-DFW-EWR. EWR-MCO-EWR. Rinse & repeat ....

Ive said it before - I really wish there was a way to divide the 1Kís into domestic/intíl road warriors. Different privileges for each.

I.E. - give intíl 1Kís access to polaris lounges, plenty of GPUs (on any fare class!) and maybe some other privileges but not CPUs. Let the domestic 1Ks get CPU priority and maybe some other extra domestic privileges.

Something like that - havenít fully thought it out - but things like GPUs donít help me much. Iíd trade them for GS-like CPU privileges any day of the week....

When I was in exactly the same situation with LH a year ago, I called UA and had them book it. It was a bit of a hassle as they couldn't really distinguish premium economy from regular economy. Be prepared to ask for the particular fair class letter(s). And you probably want to ask them to waive the talk-to-a-human fee as you can't book this on .bomb.

There are all sorts of things one can spend money on United that don't earn either PQD or miles. Upgrade fees paid at the time of check-in, even non-trivial ones over $1,000, don't, for example.

Just another reason why my United business (and my local airport is their SFO hub) has gone from many thousands of dollars a year to virtually nothing.

Along the way, I've discovered that virtually every major foreign airline has a better international business or first class than United, and that includes even United with the new Polaris seats.
