The Joint Typhoon Warning Center's latest warning graphic shows a fairly direct hit on HKG by Hato.

Flying into Storm HATO in HKG - need rebooking help

Dear all,

I am currently (Aug 22) flying AKL-SIN on SQ, connecting to HKG on SQ.

Tomorrow, Aug 22, I am supposed to fly UA HKG-SFO. I just got notice of a 12 hour delay because of storm HATO.

I would love to know of some good options. My UA ticket is revenue with a GPU confirmed into C.

I have booked SIN-TPE-LAX on BR with miles as a backup, but TPE might be facing the same weather.

Should I try to book via NRT/ICN instead? ANy other options you can suggest?

There are no weather related problems in Taiwan. I am in Kaoshiung in the south, the Tropical Storm (downgraded from Typhoon) is passing well to the south of this Island. It does seems it will pass Hong Kong late tonight/early morning though.

You mean 8/23 local time, right?

I just did a rebooking for my GM friend. There are the only options left:

- HKG-SIN-SFO
- HKG-GUM-HNL-GUM

Since you are originally booked in Y, UA needs to find you a Y seat first. The actual situation looks very ugly for the next few days.

Getting out or stuck, it is your call.

Incorrect. The actual situation is:

- All morning flights tomorrow ex-HKG (SFO/ORD/EWR) are cancelled.

- All evening flights tomorrow ex-HKG (SIN/GUM) are still on schedule as of this moment.

Well, I am now overnighting in SIN. I secured an award Business Class ticket on EVA through TPE, avoiding HKG altogether.

You were lucky. I didn't get a notice that my flight tomorrow (8/23) was cancelled until after I landed into HK. If I got a delay notice before I took off for HK, I would checked more carefully and have rerouted too. Looks like any flight back to New York won't happen at this point. Rebooked to Thursday so extra day in HK sounds nice but probably will be struck in the hotel with this storm.

UA will certainly refund the ticket for the cancelled flight. It will take a request and is best made prior to the originally-scheduled departure, but not doing so will only take longer.

Whether OP is entitled to a refund of his unflown cash-paid segment is a matter of the fare rules for his ticket.

I'm really, really glad I got the notification yesterday while flying into SIN. I was able to rearrange all my travel before landing.

I ended up staying overnight at the Crown Plaza at the airport. Wonderful place!

I'm now in the SKL waiting for my flights to TPE and LAX.

My flight into SIN was on SQ in F using their miles. The ticket was supposed to connect on 8/22 into HKG. I had them offload me. Had I been on that flight, I would have been stuck there. I don't see anything coming or going into HKG as I write.

UA is refunding the HKG-LAX flight and the GPU. Sigh, I really, really wanted to be on that flight. 777-300. First true Polaris international for me. But the plane will still be there.

I used 80K miles to get myself home on EVA.

It's a good thing I invested the 20 bucks to have Wi-Fi on my flight. Otherwise, I could've spent two or three days on the ground in Hong Kong waiting to get home.

I have a mileage run for this weekend.

Do you think I can simply ask for mileage credits?
Do you think they will also do million miler credits?

You can potentially get original routing credit, including million miler credit, if your flights are cancelled or severely delayed. If you attempt to claim it in advance, without trying to fly, I expect that your request would be denied.

In the past, the general answer has been no.

You can get a refund but to get http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...ng-merged.html appears you actually have to do some flying.

ORC does include Lifetime miles.
