I have qualified for Platinum and now have my first RPU.
Totally new to United elite status.
I am looking to use this RPU from SFO to IAD in 10 days time, there is no availability right now,
I understand that I can book a coach fare and apply an RPU to a waitlist, how can I determine success?
should I only only be looking at remaining seats on flight or is there something else I can check to validate my chances?

You need to activate and use "Expert Mode" in order to see the current inventory, if PZ > 0, then upgrade is available (no wait-list), if PN > 0, wait-list but with high chance of clearing it.
