United sent one of those "Upgrade to premium cabin" e-mails this afternoon, so I thought I'd see if I could throw an RPU at this flight. Much to my surprise, I could (while the E175 I'm flying DCA-EWR did not have PZ inventory open). As of now, the flight shows PZ2, with three of 12 F seats taken and E+ only 1/7 full.

10+ on the upgrade list for a premium service transcon flight. I just SDCed from a different flight and was not on the upgrade list. Saw PZ space open up 20 minutes before boarding. Ran to the customer service desk, asked to apply my RPU and was issued a business class seat a few moments later.

This implies that if you're on the upgrade list, you can't do what I did? For what it's worth, the 1K desk said I had to upgrade in-person at the gate. Yet, the CS desk at the airport did it for me.

I suspect this was a misconnect as me and another guy got upgraded just as they were shutting the door, and this was a late afternoon departure from EWR.

I used to be able to find good P fares if booked sufficiently ahead of time for Thursday out and Sundays back but nowadays EWR<->SFO is just impossible and all I see are C/D/J, *maybe* a Z if lucky... UA must be m-i-n-t-i-n-g money on the route. Clearly there is ample demand for much more capacity here...

When random midweek r/t in Nov runs $3,000 in J, you can say that again. Fare was $5,000 when I checked a few hours ago.

We're getting close to where it was before Mint, when lowest fare SFO-JFK was around $3200. It was much easier to clear RPUs back then though. The SDC into open R at T-24 was golden in those days.

I cleared the 781 LAX-EWR on an M fare couple weeks back.
