sUA 28J 757-200 to receive fuel tank mod, remain in fleet past 2018
757-200 28J fleet will be staying around longer. NGS kits are scheduled to be installed starting July 2018. HMV and C checks scheduled into 2019.

A smart move. It seems quite clear that current management didn't want to pull the trigger on A321neo LRs given how much they like the 'paper plane' Boeing 797. Hopefully they can refresh the cabins a little bit, though - all of the 752s feel a little beat up at this point in time.

Makes sense in a lot of ways, especially if the Boeing MoM plane is really coming in the near future. And it seems like the full fleet review promised by the incoming management is starting to get to some decision points.

this is HUGE news and worthy of its own thread. i know many of us thought it would be a smart move to keep the pmUA birds flying, but for management to reverse the decision is nothing short of shocking to me (in a good way!).

I had a feeling the sub UA 752s would be sticking around longer based on the fuel tank mod announcement and that they are installing the orange warning straps/flags found on sub CO 757s and all 737 aircraft (what we place over the viewing window on the door when we arm the slide) on the sub UA 752s.

Now that NGS is coming, I suspect the scimitar winglet caps on the 757-222s won't be far behind.

I always thought those were kind of redundant on the 757 because of the knuckle-knocker and since the door will disarm if opened from outside. With that said, the 757 is not immune to accidental slide deployment, so anything to prevent that makes sense, especially something as cheap as the orange strap. Will the sUA PA script be updated to ask flight attendants to "verify straps" before all-call?

Kirby. Good call. No availability of other suitable aircraft to satisfy the route demand as UA attempted to draw down the PS fleet. They're old planes but DL runs 75s like they're band new. The sCO 75s have been a workhorse for years. Until Boeing or Airbus manufacture more RB211s, it's always going to be a catch-up play. Even the 321Neos are on the Pratt geared platform, I understand.
737-900ERs are great aircraft -- but there is no replacing the PS fleet & 75s. John Wayne or Glasgow, it's the only aircraft that you can point to a specific route and it just handles it.

^^
The bottom line was that even if United wanted to pull the trigger on A321neoLRs (or just regular neos) I doubt that United could have gotten enough A/C before 2018, which would have really put them in a hole with still very important premium passangers, for whom the 757 is far nicer than a retrofitted 737-900 would have been.

With that said, I was sad to see them go too for sentimental reasons, and I made sure to book one last flight on the PMUA domestic 752 before they went. Nice to see they're keeping them for p.s. (and Hawaii and TATL) for a little while longer, as those are the routes where there really isn't anything else UA could get in a reasonable amount of time to replace them with.
