Purchase Miles (RDMs) sales / discounts / bonuses [Consolidated 2016]
Alternative - Award / Premier Accelerator
Award Accelerator is generally cheaper (2.0 to 2.6 cpm is typical) but the rate varies. There is no annual limit but the offered quantities (usually 2 offers) are fixed per itin and requires the purchaser to have an active reservation to get an offer. The quantity offer is loosely related to the mileage of the itinerary. The reservation can be cancel after purchasing the miles. See the above Accelerator threads for more.

United Airlines Award/Premier Accelerator Rates [2017]
Purchase / Personal Miles is always available and is "easiest" method; however, even with one of the regular sales / discounts / bonus promotions, it generally is more expensive than Award Accelerator. Miles are available in increments of 1,000 up to a maximum of 100,000 miles, and in increments of 5,000 up to a maximum of 150,000 miles. And there is an annual limit of 150,000 miles per account per calendar year.United Airlines Award/Premier Accelerator Rates [2017]

Star Alliance member Avianca is currently offering a promotion selling miles with a 140% bonus. The price works out to 1.375 cpm with no taxes, and the LifeMiles program has no fuel surcharge on redemptions. Most you can buy is 200,000 mile ($6,600) which gets you 480,000 miles with the bonus.
Personally I would not consider buying UA miles unless they were < 2 CPM and I could use them almost immediately for a reward redemption.
Log in to your United Mileage Plus account and go to the purchase miles option.

i know 1.9 not groundbreaking but have you ever seen a better offer from UA on miles purchase? I thought it was their most generous bonus... i may be wrong.

In theory, you can buy unlimited miles with Award Accelerator: book a long distance ticket, buy miles with Award Accelerator right away, then cancel ticket within the 24 hour window. If you do it early enough in your credit card cycle, the charge and the credit should show in the same statement so that should balance out with no issue (unless you use a card that you're revolving on).

What would your cpm have to be to actually pull the trigger?
I too got 80% but 1.9 cpm isn't worth it.
I also got a "did you forget to complete your purchase" email after I played around on the purchase page and then left.

MileagePlus Miles on "Sale"
Dear FT Friends,
If you need to boost your MileagePlus account with extra miles, now through April 20th, United is offering up to 75% bonus miles on miles purchased.
"Get to your next award trip or cabin upgrade sooner when you purchase miles from now until April 20 and receive up to 75% bonus miles with your purchase.
Buy 5,000 - 14,000 miles | Get 25% bonus
Buy 15,000 - 29,000 miles | Get 50% bonus
Buy 30,000 - 85,000 miles | Get 75% bonus"
I used this plan last year and bought enough miles for a one way flight from MEL to ORD.
MEL-BKK-NRT in business class TK/NH mix and then NRT-ORD was in first class on NH (United First Saver). I purchased 55,000 miles for that ticket and it cost me around $1450.00 I combined with 25,000 miles I had already and booked a one way award ticket......if I had paid cash for the ticket it would have been close to $22,000.00....you CAN find value in purchased miles!

Unless something has changed recently, you can always get miles at 2 cents per mile with mileage accelerator.
No point in spending money if you don't have concrete plans IMHO @:-)
