Waitilisting for awards

Click for the current rules from United

From the above link:You may redeem miles for travel in United Global First, United First, United Business or United BusinessFirst, even if the space is not available. In these cases, United Economy in the same award type must be confirmed, and the front cabin will be waitlisted. If the courtesy waitlist does not clear, it will expire 24 hours before itinerary departure, and you will automatically be added to the airport upgrade standby list upon check-in. In these cases, you will be confirmed on a space-available basis by a United airport representative at the gate once the flight has closed for check-in. For United BusinessFirst and United Business travel awards, the difference in miles will be refunded when the United BusinessFirst or United Business class segment of the trip could not be confirmed. Waitlist requests may only be made over the phone with your local United Customer Contact Center.
Member experiences:
  1. You must have a confirmed segment to wait list for different cabin and/or a different flight.
  2. Can only waitlist for UA/UX operated flight, cannot waitlist for partner flights. Can waitlist for UA/UX flights on a mixed itin.
  3. Maximum number of WL segments in a PNR is 2.
  4. When confirmed segment is on a partner, you can waitlist for UA operated alternative.
A report of being refused waitlisting for Economy{mixed reports - need further confirmation/clarification}.

At the airport if you have not yet cleared:

Note: The correct priority term here may in fact be a code that is one of WAI, WBI, WCI, or WDI depending on status. The is per GG ONESTANDBY lines 32-55.

With this status the odds of you getting a business class are very high if there are still open seats (or if anybody no-shows).

If the agents in the airport are all clueless you should direct them to look
up “gg onestandby” in their system (they’ll know exactly what this is)
and look around lines 85-89 which spell out the details of the procedure for
this award.
Note: PR-1 status is given to those who "paid" the requisite miles for an upgraded seat (i.e. biz) when only the non-upgraded space (i.e. coach) was available. The PR-1 status is to clue the system (and agents) in so that it is clear that you have been "displaced." (NOTE: once you have obtained PR-1 status, should there be any change to your ticket, e.g., an involuntary reroute by UA due to missing a connection, the PR-1 status will most likely get dropped and you must have it reattached (esp. before any UGs are given to others).

Unfortunately at T-24, many GAs do not get this concept. Use the above to plead your case but be prepared to be unsatisfied. One method that can get you to a higher level of understanding is the UC. Their staff seem to not only have a better understanding of the issues, but they can contact the gate and exert some influence on the less informed GAs, AND they seem to have more of an interest in helping PAX. If you can get into the UC, it will be worth your while.

**Note: If you get the UG on the long haul, the higher level of award miles you are using (like with the GPU) are considered used up regardless of the short haul. You will not be charged the lower level # of miles (i.e. refunded the diff between the lower level and the higher level you paid in advance), rather the higher level award miles will be considered spent. That is the risk you take when you do Plan B.

Thanks much!!
Phil,
For plan B, you should have booked the business "fare" with the correct number of miles for business, where the saver economy was available but the business seat was not. This automatically places top priority to your upgrade since the system treats you as a displaced pax (paid for biz but stuck in Econ). If you try now to rebook the right way, and there is no saver Econ available, you'll lose your saver Econ booking, so be careful there.

If the upgrade never goes through, you'll get your miles back.

I have a waitlist request like this that is booked in X (IN class requested). When I called to do this, they reissued the ticket and deducted the extra miles. Are you sure they never deducted the extra miles?

It will be very interesting to see if this goes to the gate if it ends up at the top of the upgrade list automatically. I mostly expected the request just to expire at check in. Maybe not?

What Is The Process for Getting CPU Listed

I booked a First class international award for my travelling companion in January. All seats are in first except the two domestic segments. (My I class upgrade requests cleared) Companion is a Gold and is a primary cardholder of two Mileage Plus credit cards

What is the process to get listed for CPU upgrade?

Two agents told me you can only do it at the airport when you check in????

I recommend asking the agent to remove and readd (if possible) your companion FF code to their own ticket.

This should put the person into the EUA queue (might take an hour or two for the arrows to reflect in the res).

CPU is not the right concept here -- and the credit card is not issue (your miles + their cards do not create eligibility)

they should be waitlist now, as you were and at the airport they should be about upgraders but some agents are award of this and others are not. More on this in this thread.

The reservation was I class waitlisted for at least 6 months. That will not clear. I will continue searching FlyerTalk. I think it is a CPU??:

http://www.united.com/web/en-US/cont...e/default.aspx

states:

Upgrading award tickets

Premier members who are primary cardholders for certain Chase-issued MileagePlus credit cards are eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades when traveling on award tickets on United-operated flights. The following credit cards qualify for this benefit:

United MileagePlus Explorer Card

Complimentary Premier Upgrades on award tickets will be sorted as indicated in the "Upgrade Confirmation Priority" section above, and prioritized after the lowest paid fare class within each Premier level. This benefit does not apply to companions traveling on award tickets.

The tickets for this benefit has to be booked from the same account as the primary cardholder -- so if you booked the tickets, the passenger's credit card is of no benefit.

If it goes to gate it may not be automatic afterwards. You would do well to check with the person in charge of the list at the gate (or sometimes the UC can help).

How can you book a saver "I" fare, Bus/First, when no seats show as available? My flt. actually shows about 6 left on a 739.

I spoke to an CSR last night who has been with UA for over 20 yrs and she said I couldn't do this.

I guess it's a case of hang up and call again, eh?

Yes they can. But you must have confirmed Saver Y seats to begin with. Then they book the BF seats and deduct the additional miles and waitlist you for I inventory,.

Why is this so friggin difficult? I have called multiple times over the last several weeks and they can not get it right. I have a domestic FC (I) award and one segment is in coach(X). Several agents say they can not waitlist an award ticket and one agent did waitlist it. However, that agent either did it wrong or was lying since I was never wait listed.

I also check almost daily if "I" becomes available. I guess that is as close to wait listing it will get.

OMG. I finally got it after so many tries. My call was picked up by the preferred desk and they took care of it no problem. Fast and efficient. Now the fingers are crossed.

I or IN WL

I'm a bit search challenged so forgive me.
I have a Global first award to Australia. The domestic was not available in F so it is booked in X. I finally got a phone rep who agreed that F could be WL. It shows I requested in my record. Is I or IN the bucket for an elite request?
