Have an upcoming trip you want to cancel and redeposit the miles -- but subject to the 30 day or less cancel fee?
Just use the free change to move to a flight further in the future (>31 days) not subject to the cancellation fee and then cancel / redeposit for free.
Note the change does not need to be to the same itin or the same mileage cost. If the change is to a cheaper mileage ticket, the extra miles will be redeposited for free.

United continues to waive redeposit fees for all award tickets, booked at any time, for all MileagePlus members and all points of origin. The current location this is located on United's website is described below.

On this page which shows the chart with fees (https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly...ticketing.html). There is the banner at the top showing

And if you follow it through all the way it eventually takes you to the no change fees page (https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly...hange-fee.html), with the FAQs on award travel indicating redeposit fee is currently being waived.

Fee for making a change or canceling with redeposit 31 or more days before departure = No Fee
Fee for making a change to a ticket for travel originating in the U.S. 30 or fewer days before departure = No fee
Fee for canceling a ticket for travel originating in the U.S. with miles redeposit 30 or fewer days before departure = $125
Fee for making a change to or canceling international tickets that do not originate in the U.S. 30 or fewer days before departure = $125

That seems to be what we are expecting. Nice that the 31 day or more cancellation is also no fee even if the flight doesn't originate in the US. I wonder if giving agents the exact URL so that they could look it up is something that they would be able to do.

We{UA} have removed some redeposit fees for the rest of the year.
  • We are currently waiving all award redeposit fees for travel through end of May 2020.
  • We are now also waiving all redeposit fees for award ticket cancellations made more than 30 days before departure for the remainder of 2020.

Fees for a change or redeposit:
  • There are fees for some changes and redeposit , so please check the chart below for details. These fees apply to MileagePlus® awards on United, United Express®, Star Alliance® airline partners and other airline partners.
  • When requesting a change for more than one ticket, the fee applies to each ticket separately. If two people are traveling together and make a change, for example, there will be a fee for both.
  • When flying with one of our Star Alliance partners, changes must be made at least 24 hours before departure. {but in many cases much less will work -- somewhat YMMV -- but the rules state 24 hours}
  • Fees are based on the status of the mileage account holder at the time of the request
  • Fee for canceling / redeposit a mileage upgrade

UA's Award ticketing options/service fees

With Changes To UA MileagePlus Coming On NOV 15, 2019 (Dynamic UA Awards - No More Chart)close-in booking fees will disappear

Close-in fee trick:
Multiple reports this no longer works.
{Book outside the close-in window and then change "for free" in the 24-hour change free window}

Award tickets booked prior to Oct 6, 2016 will be covered by the old pre-Oct 6 rules but some changes (such as changing the first segment} will re-ticket the award and make it subject to the new rules

Re: avoiding the $75 close in booking fee.

Just a data-point. Booked an award ticket online today more than 21 days out. Tried to change the date to tomorrow online and with the iOS app, and both wanted to add the $75 close-in booking fee to the change. Called in the first time and got Ms Smarty Pants who knew the rule. HUCA'd and got someone with less smart pants, and got it through without the $75 fee. So it's still alive but YMMV.

Still can get around the $75 by calling but depends on the operator. Just did it today but needed HUCA once. YMMV but still possible.

Anyone know if the close-in fee applies when changing an existing award booking to a new flight within 21 days from time of change in the following situations:

- already paid a close-in fee on the original reservation since it was booked within 21 days initially
- didn’t pay the close-in fee on initial booking because was initially booked farther than 21 days out

in either case, does it being all UA metal make a difference?

Neither should incur a close-in booking fee, but either should incur the change fee, which increases 60 days before departure and so essentially subsumes the close-in fee. UA metal or not doesn’t make a difference.

thanks - haven’t had to change an award in a long time, but may need to book one soon that may require a change. Obviously, in that case, am expecting the change fee - just was hoping that it wasn’t another fee on top of that.

Does a change not incur a change fee which is the same 75$? Or can I make a date change without changing airports and it doesn't count for the change fee?

I need to cancel a one way to PRG on Austrian. I have no immediate need for the miles; can I avoid a phone wait by cancelling online and paying the redeposit fee at that time?

You can cancel online and not pay anything. You only have to pay when you want to reuse the miles (either a change fee or redeposit fee).

I might be in this situation as well. So if you want to reuse the miles for later date how to you tell the phone agent? Do I have to keep the ticket number and tell them that? Or should they be able to see on the system that I have a ticket that is not yet used?

I just booked an award ticket LHR-FRA-ORD on LH. I see ORD-DSM is available that same day with miles and I just called to add that to the ticket for the same price but the agent on the phone said she couldn't do it. Is this a HUCA situation?

Yes, it's both HUACA and YMMV. Many agents will say they can't make single segment changes to an award without rebooking the entire itinerary (which requires available space on all segments).

As I prepare to lose my 1K status for next year, I figure I need to understand fees better. 2 questions:

1 - What constitutes a "change" that will trigger the change fee - any date/time/O&D/routing change? Or, only O&D change? How about SDC?

2 - If I apply miles to Star Alliance Upgrade Award (or even UA Upgrade) and the trip is cancelled or changed, do you have to pay a fee for redeposit?

Thanks.

For a UA upgrade, yes, there's a redeposit fee. For the *A upgrade, no idea how that works since you're not ticketing through UA. Don't recall ever hearing how that's handled.

I have 2 UA award flights at the end of June for my wife and myself which I am expecting to need to cancel due to health reasons, this is the only award flight I have ever booked and I have never had to cancel before!

DUB-FRA-DXB, 100000 miles and £83
DXB-FRA-DUB, 100000 miles and £100

I have no MileagePlus status, so I figure it will be $125 each, each way. The 200000 miles will be redeposited into my account and I assume the £100+£83 is recredited as well.

Is that the way it works?

Won't know until next wqeek if it needs to be cancelled or not.
