Award ticketing options/service fees
There are no longer any fees for worldwide UA award cancellation or mileage redeposit done pre-travel including UA partner awards

8 Nov 2022
As part of the 2023 MileagePlus program updates award redeposit fees are being removed for all levels beginning 1 Jan 2023
**This does not apply to redepositing after a no-show**

Have an upcoming trip you want to cancel and redeposit the miles -- but subject to the 30 day or less cancel fee?
Just use the free change to move to a flight further in the future (>31 days) not subject to the cancellation fee and then cancel / redeposit for free.
Note the change does not need to be to the same itin or the same mileage cost. If the change is to a cheaper mileage ticket, the extra miles will be redeposited for free.

United continues to waive redeposit fees for all award tickets, booked at any time, for all MileagePlus members and all points of origin. The current location this is located on United's website is described below.

And if you follow it through all the way it eventually takes you to the no change fees page (https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly...hange-fee.html), with the FAQs on award travel indicating redeposit fee is currently being waived.

Fee for making a change or canceling with redeposit 31 or more days before departure = No Fee
Fee for making a change to a ticket for travel originating in the U.S. 30 or fewer days before departure = No fee
Fee for canceling a ticket for travel originating in the U.S. with miles redeposit 30 or fewer days before departure = $125
Fee for making a change to or canceling international tickets that do not originate in the U.S. 30 or fewer days before departure = $125

That seems to be what we are expecting. Nice that the 31 day or more cancellation is also no fee even if the flight doesn't originate in the US. I wonder if giving agents the exact URL so that they could look it up is something that they would be able to do.

Fees for a change or redeposit:
  • There are fees for some changes and redeposit , so please check the chart below for details. These fees apply to MileagePlus® awards on United, United Express®, Star Alliance® airline partners and other airline partners.
  • When requesting a change for more than one ticket, the fee applies to each ticket separately. If two people are traveling together and make a change, for example, there will be a fee for both.
  • When flying with one of our Star Alliance partners, changes must be made at least 24 hours before departure. {but in many cases much less will work -- somewhat YMMV -- but the rules state 24 hours}
  • Fees are based on the status of the mileage account holder at the time of the request
  • Fee for canceling / redeposit a mileage upgrade

UA's Award ticketing options/service fees

With Changes To UA MileagePlus Coming On NOV 15, 2019 (Dynamic UA Awards - No More Chart)close-in booking fees will disappear

Close-in fee trick:
Multiple reports this no longer works.
{Book outside the close-in window and then change "for free" in the 24-hour change free window}

Award tickets booked prior to Oct 6, 2016 will be covered by the old pre-Oct 6 rules but some changes (such as changing the first segment} will re-ticket the award and make it subject to the new rules

That assumes United ever acknowledges the change - it has been 6 weeks since the change and my itinerary still shows A380 on United.com. Can I force them to acknowledge and force a change somehow?

Yeah, I know I am screwed here as my outbound is awesome and don't want to do anything to mess it up....

Thanks, at least I'll be able to try this...maybe...

Yeah, live and learn, I am still a NOOB at a lot of this stuff and this place is an incredible resource, but still sooooo many rules and nuances to know and remember.

Hi everyone!

Originally was scheduled for TUL-DEN-FRA-KWI-DOH on a United Biz Saver award operated by Lufthansa. All flights except TUL-DEN were booked in I class, but there was a change to the award this week. Lufthansa no longer operates the KWI-DOH segment of their FRA-KWI-DOH rotation so I am rebooked on QR in Y class. Should they have put me in Business on QR or am I just out of luck in this case and should be happy they rebooked me on QR at all? I know it's a short flight so not the end of the world but would be nice to end the trip in Business after 24 hours+ traveling.

I'm Silver if that means anything

Change Return Date on RT Award Ticket After Depature

Is it possible to change the return date of a round trip (+excursionist perk) MileagePlus Award Ticket after the outbound/departure segment has been flown? What would the fees be if the 2nd leg is scheduled for 60+ days from when change is initiated? Would I be able to change both the excursionist perk (2nd leg) date and the return leg (3rd leg). Looking at BKK-YVR SEA-NYC NYC-BKK.

I am Silver, and according to the award fee chart, I should be charged $50 (assuming the change can be made after departure). Can this change likely be completed online?

Thanks, I tried googling and searching for a quick answer but could not find one.

Allowed and possible BUT the main issue will be availability -- essentially it is like a new ticket and all the segments would need to be available.

And the new award would be to be fully consistent with the award rules of the original ticket.

And all travel needs to be completed within 1-year of the original ticket purchase date.

if all present travel dates are greater than 60 days in the future, it will be the lower change fee. $50 per ticket for a Silver.

Yes

Possibly -- but there is no additional fee for using an agent. However, award changes online are notoriously failure-prone.

Trying to get a clear answer on this - if I have an award ticket I'm already checked in for (leaving within 24 hours), is it still possible to cancel it and have the miles re-deposited without fees as a 1K?

For a UA-operated flight, yes. You'll need to cancel the check-in, which can be done on the phone (and the agent would probably do without you even asking). For a partner-operated flight, probably, although you will likely first want to call the operating carrier to cancel check in. UA officially requires 24-hour notice for changing *A tickets, but I don't think we've seen a single instance of them enforcing that; I believe it's intended to cover cases where the partner doesn't respond immediately to UA's ticketing request.

PS: Up until October 31, you can apparently even refund a (completely) unused ticket after departure, which I didn't know until they announced that they'll be a $125 fee for doing so starting on November 1.

Is the change/cancellation fee per ticket or per reservation? i.e. is the cancellation fee for two people in same reservation $200 or $400???

Per person. However, assuming that you're talking about award tickets, the $200 figure only applies to tickets that were purchased before October 6, 2016. For any tickets purchased since then, it'll be $125 per person, or $75 if done more than 60 days before the scheduled departure.

You can see the full list of fees here. Use the first chart for tickets since October.

I managed to book two one way saver awards for next April and now need to change to a week later. Round trip saver award space is currently available for the next week. Since I am so far out and Platinum can I assume there is no real advantage either way between cancel/redeposit/rebook or calling in to change the dates?

Thanks.

The only disadvantage would be that the cancel/redeposit may not happen immediately, so if you don't have enough miles to purchase two more tickets now, you may end up losing the available seats while you wait for a redeposit. A call to Premier desk will ensure the redeposit happens instantly so you can book the new tickets.

Thanks. Did call in and switched the inbound flight, but there was no Business Saver on any of the UA flights for the outbound. Ended up having the agent cancel that one and rebooked on an LX flight online.

Now, if Business Saver opens up on the UA flight at some later date and I change to it I will get the 12,500 miles back, right?

Do I remember reading upthread that to make a change to a partner award flight you are much better off calling in than doing it online?

Thanks.

E+ seat selection with status change

I have a couple hypotheticals that I wanted to clarify before booking some award tickets.

I'm currently at Gold, but will be Plat later this year. If I book award tickets for family of 5 now, I would be able to select E+ seats for one other member at booking. Later when I become Plat, from what I understand I will be able to go in and update the other family members seats to E+ with no charge?

The flight is still about 9 months out, so I will also be watching the fares for Bus/First, and may book myself or my wife (or both) on a paid ticket and cancel our award tickets, keeping the kids award tickets in place. If I did this, would they automatically get pushed out of E+, because the passenger with status is no longer on the reservation or would they be able to keep their seats?

Thanks for any comments!

They will not automatically lose E+, but they do lose their entitlement*. If there is an equipment swap or other shuffle between then and departure, they run the risk of being kicked back to E- in that case, with no recourse.

Your companions do not need to be on the same PNR, but you do need to be in the same cabin. Note also that if none of the other 3 are adults, then you have a potential unaccompanied minor problem if they are separated by cabin.

*was assuming you would be up in J or F; if in Y on a paid ticket then it's the same as if on same PNR.

Booked I&O Award - change to only O?

I booked an award ticket which includes the first & second segment in I class and connecting to O class. Now there would be the possibility taking first segment in O class and no longer have the 3rd segment needed.

Current:
NRT-PEK (I)
PEK-ICN (I)
ICN-JFK (O)

Change:
NRT-ICN (O)
ICN-JFK (O)

Is this kind of change possible? Or do I need to continue to have first segment on I? I paid First Class mileage.

Thanks guys 😃
