Have an upcoming trip you want to cancel and redeposit the miles -- but subject to the 30 day or less cancel fee?
Just use the free change to move to a flight further in the future (>31 days) not subject to the cancellation fee and then cancel / redeposit for free.
Note the change does not need to be to the same itin or the same mileage cost. If the change is to a cheaper mileage ticket, the extra miles will be redeposited for free.

Fee for making a change or canceling with redeposit 31 or more days before departure = No Fee
Fee for making a change to a ticket for travel originating in the U.S. 30 or fewer days before departure = No fee
Fee for canceling a ticket for travel originating in the U.S. with miles redeposit 30 or fewer days before departure = $125
Fee for making a change to or canceling international tickets that do not originate in the U.S. 30 or fewer days before departure = $125

That seems to be what we are expecting. Nice that the 31 day or more cancellation is also no fee even if the flight doesn't originate in the US. I wonder if giving agents the exact URL so that they could look it up is something that they would be able to do.

as of 05 April 2020
We{UA} have removed some redeposit fees for the rest of the year.
  • We are currently waiving all award redeposit fees for travel through end of May 2020.
  • We are now also waiving all redeposit fees for award ticket cancellations made more than 30 days before departure for the remainder of 2020.

Fees for a change or redeposit:
  • There are fees for some changes and redeposit , so please check the chart below for details. These fees apply to MileagePlus awards on United, United Express, Star Alliance airline partners and other airline partners.
  • When requesting a change for more than one ticket, the fee applies to each ticket separately. If two people are traveling together and make a change, for example, there will be a fee for both.
  • When flying with one of our Star Alliance partners, changes must be made at least 24 hours before departure. {but in many cases much less will work -- somewhat YMMV -- but the rules state 24 hours}
  • Fees are based on the status of the mileage account holder at the time of the request
  • Fee for canceling / redeposit a mileage upgrade

UA's Award ticketing options/service fees

With Changes To UA MileagePlus Coming On NOV 15, 2019 (Dynamic UA Awards - No More Chart)close-in booking fees will disappear

Close-in fee trick:
Multiple reports this no longer works.
{Book outside the close-in window and then change "for free" in the 24-hour change free window}

Award tickets booked prior to Oct 6, 2016 will be covered by the old pre-Oct 6 rules but some changes (such as changing the first segment} will re-ticket the award and make it subject to the new rules

I have outbound award flights to Copenhagen on June 24 to coincide with a cruise that will likely not happen. The cruise has not been cancelled yet but I expect it to. My trip has this notice on it:A travel waiver is in effect for your reservation. To make changes now, select “Change flight” below. To rebook travel later, select “Cancel flight” and you’ll be able to rebook with change fees waived. View the waiver details for more information.

I have UA flights as far as Brussels then SAS flight from Brussels to Copenhagen. I plan to take the same cruise next year, but it won't be until late August so I cannot re book award flights until September. I would have to cancel and have the miles re deposited. Since I have no status I will have to pay the redeposit fee. Should I wait until a few days before for UA or SAS to cancel to avoid the re deposit fee or should I call it in and hope the agent will waive the fees?

The return awards flights on July 8 are on SAS from Stockholm to Washington, then UA to Kansas City. That trip does not have a waiver notice on it yet but once I cancel the outbound I will cancel the return which will incur another set of re deposit fees.

Advice please on how I should proceed. Thanks.

Are these MileagePlus tickets? When were they booked? No travel waiver has been published that would cover travel on UA-issued tickets for June 24.

Re-evaluate on April 23. The world may look very different by then. If you cancel your travel there, and they decide to charge the fee, you'll be charged at the lower rate ($75, not $125).

Same advice: re-evaluate on May 7.

wait but remember that from 60 days in the redeposit goes from $75 to $145 per ticket. So before redeposit change it to a later date and then cancel

i called today an got 3 award tickets redeposited, one for a cancelled air canada flight, one for a rescheduled hawaiian airlines flight (interisland) and one for a rescheduled united flight, no redeposit fees requested by the agent, all miles promptly were back in my account and i was told taxes and fees may take a while before they post. all of them were for mid april. i was worried they would try and charge me from other peoples experiences on this thread but all my awards were cancelled within 10mins.

According to View from the Wing, UA is now waiving all fees for award ticket cancellations and miles redeposit for everyone, not just elites. Has anyone seen this on their web site to confirm?

Thank you susiesan! As I have done every morning for two weeks, I tried earlier today to cancel some award tickets and they still tried to charge me $50. After reading your post I just tried again and noticed for the first time the following wording 'As a valued premier member no fee applies', and I was able to cancel two of the three reservations without a fee (the third one said 'Your refund requires special attention, Please call us....' I'll try again later)

I appreciate the head's up!

Free redeposit also works for previously cancelled flights if they are still available for rebooking later. I just went online and pulled up my cancelled flights, clicked on cancel, and it came up showing no fee to redeposit. The miles went back immediately.

If that's the case, then apparently they are only giving the free redeposit for tickets issued before 3/2, as they have different waivers applying to tickets booked before 3/2 and after 3/2.

They refund the me the Tax automatically, but not the booking/changing fee. Going to call them again tonight

Had award travel on LX flight booked in Sep 2019 for travel next week. Called a week ago and United wanted re-deposit fee. Called today and re-deposit fee was waived without me even asking. Miles already back, will watch for tax refund.

No sign of my tax refund after having miles redeposited 10 days ago. I have now just completed a refund request for them using their online form.
