Main Impact
  • No more free stopover - replaced with Excursionist Perk
  • Agents no longer have the ability to find routings or build itineraries that do not show up on united.com
  • Manually constructing trips using multi-city search results in multiple award fares being charged
  • Changing any segment basically requires current availability for all existing Os&Ds in the PNR (as if a brand new booking is made)
  • Singapore Airlines segments are priced separately (add-ons)

Useful Links
EveryDay Awards - UA MP award changes 1 Nov 2017 (Everyday award/dynamic price, No RTW, No Show fee,..)
principle change - Standard awards being replaced by "EveryDay Award" with variable pricing

What is the Excursionist Perk?
The Excursionist Perk is a free one-way award within select multi-city itineraries. Members who book an itinerary with three or more one-way awards will be eligible to receive one of those one-way awards for free, if it meets all of these conditions:
The Excursionist Perk cannot be in the MileagePlus defined region where your travel originates. (For example, if your journey begins in North America, you will only receive the Excursionist Perk if travel is within a region outside of North America.)
  • Travel must end in the same MileagePlus defined region where travel originates.
  • The origin and destination of the Excursionist Perk is within a single MileagePlus defined region.
  • The cabin of service and award type of the free one-way award is the same or lower than the one-way award preceding it.
  • If two or more one-way awards qualify for this benefit, only the first occurrence will be free.

1. Individually they all work, I was hoping to get SZX PVG free with excursion perk and make the whole trip slightly cheaper. However, no results come up with the multicity search. Is there something I need to change with the search?
This itinerary isnt eligible for the Excursionist Perk because it starts and ends in different regions.

I see, dumb question, I didn't realize. But it should still show me results in a multicity though, right?
And anything else I'm not thinking of for PVG SFO?

2. PVG to SFO is really expensive now. It used to be 300USD on economy.
That price was pre-COVID. It is almost 10x more expensive ($3000 round trip).

For you award booking, all segments are treated as one-ways.
PVG-SFO is very expensive, but if you make two separate bookings such as PVG-TPE/ICN/HND/NRT and TPE/ICN/HND/NRT-SFO, you can get reasonable prices.
Good luck.
Edit: If you have a friend who can book XN space, SFO-PVG on May 1 can be booked for 55K miles plus $30.30 taxes/fees.
Edit: BKK-HKG on April 25 can be purchased for $70 on HK Express. The miles are not a good use for this route.

No worries.

The multi-city search sometimes seems to flake out and not show all options. Calling can usually get it onto one reservation, but since this isn't eligible for the Excursionist Perk, I would advise booking them as three separate itineraries. That way, if you need to change any of them -- or if, say, you see a price drop on PVG-SFO -- you can adjust that one itinerary without risking the rest of them.

I earned 400k miles throughout my years as a 1k (mostly flying LH) and want to spend it on a return flight to New Zealand starting Jan 25 with a four weeks stay. I have no specific airline option, but business class is mandatory. I made five attempts throughout the last two months in order to find a routing from Europe to New Zealand without a single hit in Business, only eco flights are bookable. Could it be true that while now being in lousy status 'member' I do not see what's really available ? When I switch the option from miles to money, I see much availibility. Do I have an option to call somebody at United who helps me with available routings ?

Getting from Europe to NZ will be hard.
1) Some of the most likely long-haul carriers to Asia and Australia no longer have availability through UA a long time out. (e.g. TG seems to become available from about 6 months out.)
2) Getting to Australia first is the most obvious way, but NZ almost never has any business class award seats for anyone and there are few other *A carriers from that direction.

I had to make a Paris to Sydney booking this summer and had a similar problem. Probably not helpful if your miles are already with UA, but I ended up transferring my Chase UR points to SQ instead and found plenty of good options through Changi. That said, during my search I did see some options that almost worked (usually overnight layovers) through India, Egypt, and even Bali using UA miles. January may be harder though (my booking was in July). As noted above, finishing up the last leg to NZ should be easier, especially if you're willing to do trans-Tasman in Y.

You need to have a chase united credit card . Then if seats are available on the plane you can at least book a standard award.

All UA routings should be available as JN awards, they will be expensive
Routings via partners requires I space, Cheaper UA routings are I or IN space.
But as general member you will not have access to IN inventory. That is only available to Plat or higher.elities

Chase Credit card will not help looking for business award space.

usually if you are a member of mileage plus award flight show up, although miles required could be very high

You have a routing problem. There are still hidden routing rules in MileagePlus awards: one of them is that Europe to Australia / New Zealand travel must be via Asia. As a 1K member, I also cannot see any business class awards searching, e.g., FRA-AKL.

Multi-city search will show you prices, but you're not going to like them much. I did a sample trip FRA-SFO-AKL and vv, and it was a total of 750K miles. You might be able to get it down to 400K miles if you find saver space on each leg, but UA rarely releases saver business class space, especially in the I bucket that you'd need for an award without Platinum status or higher.

If one of the Asian or European airlines does open space via Asia, you'd suddenly see a Business column in your search results.

Might be a newbie question, but I have booked an LH award ticket MCO-IAH-FRA.
The IAH-FRA sector is operated by LH and is in C, which is fine, but the MCO-IAH sector operated by UA is only in Eco (X fare)
Looks like the X fare can only be upgraded using cash as far as Eco Plus.
Anyone know of any workaround to get into First?
I have no status with LH or UA, which makes it even harder, I guess.

I just flew a similar routing: MCO-IAD-VIE with the first flight in UA XN and the second in OS business. UA gave me the option to upgrade MCO-IAD to United first for $139, but I didn't take it.

Economy Plus (E+) is not an "upgrade". It is in the same cabin, with the same service. Rather, buying E+ is a "seat selection" fee. You would be paying for an additional three inches of pitch (space between the seat in front of you).

Excursionist Ticket Dead? or am I doing something wrong

Maybe I'm doing this all wrong, trying to do a SFO-HND, then a Beijing-Shanghai, then KIX -SFO - the system give me no airport found or something.
Second I tried SFO-HND, then PEK - HND, and finally KIX-SFO, this was not bookable either, the first leg shows no available flights.
Last I tried SFO-HND, Paris-Fra, KIX-SFO, first leg showed up, but the second leg shows no flights.

So is the Excursionist Ticketing Dead or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Forgot to mention, each leg individually has many availabilities
