Main Impact
  • No more free stopover - replaced with Excursionist Perk
  • Agents no longer have the ability to find routings or build itineraries that do not show up on united.com
  • Manually constructing trips using multi-city search results in multiple award fares being charged
  • Changing any segment basically requires current availability for all existing Os&Ds in the PNR (as if a brand new booking is made)
  • Singapore Airlines segments are priced separately (add-ons)

Useful Links
EveryDay Awards - UA MP award changes 1 Nov 2017 (Everyday award/dynamic price, No RTW, No Show fee,..)
principle change - Standard awards being replaced by "EveryDay Award" with variable pricing

What is the Excursionist Perk?
The Excursionist Perk is a free one-way award within select multi-city itineraries. Members who book an itinerary with three or more one-way awards will be eligible to receive one of those one-way awards for free, if it meets all of these conditions:
The Excursionist Perk cannot be in the MileagePlus defined region where your travel originates. (For example, if your journey begins in North America, you will only receive the Excursionist Perk if travel is within a region outside of North America.)
  • Travel must end in the same MileagePlus defined region where travel originates.
  • The origin and destination of the Excursionist Perk is within a single MileagePlus defined region.
  • The cabin of service and award type of the free one-way award is the same or lower than the one-way award preceding it.
  • If two or more one-way awards qualify for this benefit, only the first occurrence will be free.

Do I really need to click on each day individually to look for saver awards?
Unfortunately, that's the way it is. And keep in mind, UA has one of the easier award travel interfaces in the industry.

Before the day of travel, it'd be the ticketing airline. On the day of travel, whoever has the IRROPS is responsible for fixing it for you.

Lol, thank you.

I just trying booking it via UA but, despite 3 business seats showing as available, only 1 is. So for now this is a bust. One thing she said was that the site might allow me to book it but LX has 24 hours to respond/ticket and they often come back with "won't ticket". She was a smart, savvy, helpful agent who didn't want me to transfer points over unless she could truly book it. When she did a dummy booking, it would only return 1. Trying for 3 she got errored out.

That is a good agent, and checking via phone for phantom availability before transferring points is a very savvy move. Expert Flyer can also help see availability but even then, the phone agents seem to see the best results.

I have a RT award ticket and the return is Rome-Chicago-My Hometown. I now want to end the trip in Chicago. If I call to cancel the last leg, is United going to let me without penalty, or will they want to reprice the ticket based on the present higher points cost Rome-Chicago?

It depends if the entire ticket is UA or has partner awards. If it is all UA, they probably can, if it involves partner awards, I personally wouldn't risk it. You could also no-show to your last flight as your baggage will come off the carousel in Chicago at customs but that carries some risk as it is against the CoC strictly speaking.

Indeed! She was EXCELLENT. I was only savvy on this after getting really burned a few days ago on AF (after transfer!). Their agents sucked. This UA one was fantastic. EF did have availability when I checked it earlier, but when I was on the phone with agent the availability was, in fact, 1. So not sure if I messed up my own search or if it changed in the space of an hour.

Can you attempt to change it online and see if it lets you do it with keeping desired segments intact for same points?

We have the United award reservation booked and ticketed 3 month ago (DEN-FRA-FLR, FCO-FRA-DEN).
DEN-FRA and FCO-FRA are operated by Lufthansa, FRA-FLR is operated by Air Dolomiti and FRA-DEN is operated by United.
It's confirmed and I have email with confirmation codes for United and Lufthansa and e-ticket numbers 016...

I have checked the reservations on United and Lufthansa websites and both say that everything is confirmed.
But when I go to the "See receipts" on Lufthansa website, it shows the ticket numbers for each leg except FRA-DEN operated by United.
This one says "Receipt not issued" in red.

Is it OK or I need to be concerned about that?

I can book ORD-TPE and TPE-CAN on rewards (trying to go ORD-CAN) separately with no issue but the system won't let me put it as one itinerary even if I use multi-city to force it. If I book them as 2 separate one ways, can the agent check the baggage all the way through (same airline?) or can the itinerary be joined together somehow?

If it's the same airline, that must be EVA, so it's really a question for them. but I suspect the answer is 'yes.' Itineraries cannot be joined together meaningfully.

Lufthansa will show LH segments only. Nothing wrong here.

Oh right the interline would be EVA to EVA so seems ok - I meant for United system not to put the two flights on the same itinerary. Lifemiles actually has the same problem but ANA doesn't.

UA has been blocking US-China award tickets on MileagePlus except for SFO-PVG on UA metal (at very high prices), even, as you've found, when booked via multi-city search. You won't be able to get UA to put that onto a single ticket.

How is UA with showing accurate availability of LH business award? UA was showing LX 3+ but only one was actually available.

I’ve checked Aeroplan, ANA, and EF and all showing LH business seats available on my date. I did call when trying to do LX bc I’d have to cancel an existing award and move points. But with all those confirmations across sites, I’m wondering if the call is really necessary.

LH groups is playing all sorts of married segment issues, so hard to determine availablity without looking at specific routing

agreeing with UA?

If canceling an existing, I would call. Always a wise thing in a cancel and rebook situation. It is worth the time to protect against a potential LH problem.
