They have stopped selling my return flight from KOA to SFO and switched aircraft from 737-900 to 757-300. No where close to sold out. They wouldn't cancel flight within month right, so why stop selling?

What makes you say that?

I have noticed anecdotally that when they stopped selling a flight previously it' either preempted a cancellation or another AC change.

But you stated that they wouldn't do that, and I see no basis to that assertion. They can cancel flights right up to departure.

Likely a glitch that can happen after a schedule change is run, or (less likely) they are planning a further equipment swap. Have they started selling inventory again in the last couple of days?

United Cancelled my Internation Award Flights

We had flights with Eticket numbers assigned that were cancelled by UA. The flights were nonstop HNL-NRT and back. UA sent the following message:

"Due to continuous shifts in the airline industry, your flight XXX on xx/xx/2023 for itinerary XXXXXX has been impacted. We know this is unexpected, however, we have other flights arriving at your destination in the same week. To review your options and rebook your flight, please visit the United app or united.com or call.".

It looks to me that UA just wiped off the nonstop flights from their schedule. Wondering about my options in this situation: Should UA put us on UA metal (say HNL-FSO-NRT) or a nonstop Star Alliance carrier?

Thanks for your advice. Just looking for info before I call in to speak with an agent.

If it's an award ticket, the former. If it's a revenue ticket, they should do either but they will push in the direction of UA metal.

It seems that United also cancelled ALL the "direct" flight between PVG and SFO after Nov 1. What's happening?

Yes, they wiped them from the schedule until late March. They wont put you on ANA. You can get a refund and buy your ANA or Hawaiian flight or they should give you an option via SFO or GUM.

Do schedule changes affect upgrade waitlist status

Booked trip to LHR in December and applied Plus Points to upgrade from premium plus. There was a schedule change that reduced connection time in IAD to 55 mins. This is getting quite tight depending on which terminal I arrive in to meet 45 min boarding start. Might holdout for another change or see if I can switch (wasn't quite 30 minutes total schedule change). The reservation no longer says "waitlist" for this leg (return overwater leg still says waitlist). While unlikely far out from departure, suppose PZ opened up. Would the upgrade clear? Is the lack of "waitlist" just a display glitch or is it relevant to being able to upgrade and I should accept/choose something else?

thank you.

They have more flexibility rerouting you on their own metal.

Had award tix BKK-NRT-HNL,TG, UA. They wanted to route us through MNL, GUM or NRT,GUM the latter with an overnight in GUM. Neither were acceptable. So I saw they had availability on a good 2 hour connection to NRT-LAX and then LAX-HNL, so I asked them to do that, and they did. No additional charges. I called the number in the email. I know it's not ideal, but it's workable.

Very surprised they seem to be dropping HNL-NRT. I wonder if that's really going to stick.

There were tight entry requirements in Japan, and now they are apparently removing all entry requirements. So why would they stick it out so long and then as things loosen up give up?

When it becomes official they can always add it back. With the Dollar so strong against the Yen the State isnt optimistic about Japanese tourism even when restrictions end.
