Some portion of your fare (likely a very small amount - sometimes determined pro rata by distance) will be applied to the UA flight. You will earn that many PQD, and 8x that many RDM as a Gold.
Fantastic! Thank you!!

N00b lounge question—not my first, probably won't be my last. I'll be flying in paid business SEA-SFO-ICN in a couple of months, and will try to upgrade to GF using a friend's GPU. If it clears, would I have access to the GF lounge at SFO, or is class of service based access to GF lounges reserved for those who've paid for GF as opposed to upgrading to it?

You will have access to the GFL at SFO, UA does not differentiate between paid and award tickets for lounge access.

Airport agent or the Checkin kisoks
You can not do this with smart phone app or online.

And it is key that once you do this, you must wait till the miles have posted or the miles mat not go where you intented.

I would always go for kiosks. The risk with an agent is you'll ask to change your FF details, and then the agent will figure out that you are no longer entitled to E+/extra bags/group 2/etc., and so you end up boarding last in a terrible E- middle and paying extra for your baggage. If at all possible, use a machine to avoid any potential confrontation on that issue until the gate (at which point I can't imagine a GA would bother changing your seat assignment).

I haven't seen an option to do this on the kiosk. Where do I find it?

Honestly never had to do this so couldn't tell you, but WineCountryUA suggested it was available and it seems like the sort of option that'd be within the "review your trip" screen.

10 days ago, I tried to buy Economy Plus seats for 2 pax on 2 UA domestic legs on an existing reservation. After chosing our Eco+ seats, the payment process failed twice.

I saw the USD amount held twice on my credit card for 10 days and when checking our reservation, it still showed the Eco+ seats I had selected (but not paid yet).

Today, both holds were released from the credit card and when checking the reservation on ua.com we are both still seated in Eco+, but are now sitting behind each other instead of next to each other on one of the flights. When I tried to chose a seat next to me for the 2nd passenger, I would have needd to pay for the seat again, so I left the reservation untouched for the moment.

The ticket was issued by LX and the current receipt I can download from ua.com shows the Eco+ seats, but no payment for them. The first flight is two weeks out.

Is there a chance we might get the Eco+ seats our reservation still shows, even if we have not paid for them or will we lose them before / at Check In if UA does not find a payment for them?

Has anybody had this scenario and can advise?

It is very unlikely you will lose the E+ seats you currently have unless your flight has an equipment change, or if you call in for something and a phone agent is inspecting your reservation. But if you would be really upset if you lost the E+ seats, you should call LX and get the payment to go through.

As long as your ticket is in first class on an international flight you can use UA and Star Alliance lounges.

I forget who goes first

I used 20k miles to upgrade to first from RSW to EWR on my inbound flight. I did the same for EWR to RSW.

I didn't get upgraded on the way down while elites did. What's the order of upgrades the week before I fly and at t-24? Thank you.

Those elites ahead of you might've used an instrument for XXX-EWR, and hence were ahead of you as mileage upgrades and RPUs/GPUs are the same priority.

The only thing that changes with this is the gate list, which also factors in time of check-in. So zero difference in priority a week out or T-24.

If those elites were not GS or 1Ks on YBM tickets, or unsupported, then something was amiss.

The following is the order of priority for upgrades, within four days of departure, on flights that are eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades:

Premier 1K members on eligible Y-, B- and M-class fares: Premier 1K Instant upgrades that weren't confirmed in advance are prioritized by fare class
All travelers on waitlisted Global Premier Upgrades, Regional Premier Upgrades and MileagePlus Upgrade Awards: Prioritized by Premier status of the traveler, then fare class and then time of request.
All remaining Premier members: Prioritized by Premier status of the traveler, then fare class and then award travel.

All GS (regardless of upgrade method), 1Ks on Y/B/M fares and elites (if higher status or higher fare class) using support upgrade methods would be ahead. So you would be ahead of those non-GS purely relying on CPU.

Little will change at check-in, as mentioned, a slight difference in the time factor. An difference is waitlisted awards will be added to the gate list (and above you).

So I'm new to the upgrade and miles process and I was wondering if someone can clarify something with me..

I've booked a flight from IAD to MUC (Dulles to Munich) on United on July 19th and was offered to upgrade to "buy" first class (for 2k), or waitlist to business class (I think it's business class?) for $550 and 20k miles.

The only way I can tell, is the Buying option list Polaris First Class, while the waitlist lists Polaris Business Class. Is that normally how it works?

I also understand this isn't actually "real" Polaris, it's just modified business class, but I'll deal with it.

So my question is kind of two fold, is there any reason to go ahead and get wait listed for the upgrade, as my understanding is the order that they clear are in their tiers would put me pretty much last right, or does the upgrade waitlist clear anytime before that flight (since we are still 60 days before the flight?)

My secondary question, any idea to tell what my odds are on getting upgraded? It seems like they are fairly slim right? So it makes sense for me to go ahead and get the "Economy Plus" upgrade for 120ish bucks right, even though I won't get that money back if I get upgraded to first?
