UA will generally offer cash upgrades from any non-Basic Economy fare for UA operated flights, these can be offered:
- At the time of purchase
- Before travel in the itinerary view
- At check-in (computer, smartphone, airport)
- You can inquire with an agent anytime (including at the gate)
The price can vary, as it appears multiple processes are used -- occasionally yielding strangely high offers. Always cross-check on what the fare difference might be and consider instead Buy up to higher fare class w/o change fee? {GG BUYUP}

Awards tickets may be offered similar cash upgrade but only at check-in

For Check-in offers, these can vary post initial check-in, so check back closer to departure.

Such upgrades will be eligible for all the benefits of a premium cabin ticket, UA makes no distinction on how a passenger premium cabin ticket was obtained.

Will the upgrade earn PQDs or bonus PQMs see the wiki of Some Paid Upgrades Count Towards PQD & mileage bonus and some DON"T!
On how pricing is structured, see A Comprehensive Look at Domestic First Class Monetization (FCM) on United

LAX-EWR-EZE return booked today for outbound tomorrow morning.

LAX-EWR (H) UA wants $1,100 or so for the last seat. No thanks.
EWR-EZE (H) $689 to P fare and took it

EZE-EWR (W) Upgraded at booking with GPU
EWR-LAX (W) Waitlisted

It's been a long time since flying UA intl. I totally forgot I could not upgrade within 24 hours of a flight departure. What a bitter taste since I could have used the GPU on the outbound and $450+25k miles on the return. That being said the ticket was surprisingly cheap at $1,550.

You can upgrade into open PZ, you can't waitlist.

$689 not a bad buy-up at all.

Huh. I totally forgot that I needed to be clear that the upgrade should only be applied to the PZ>0 segment and not both flights.

I did the whole trip multicity so I could manipulate each segment only to fall short. It really has been a long time since Iíve done this.

Anyway, $239 more out of pocket and saved 25k miles. I guess it worked out.

Seeing $649 (~£500) for LHR>LAX from an H fare to Polaris.

Pretty compelling, but it is a work trip that otherwise would have no cost to me. Any logic around when to pull the trigger on these?

I'd take that offer in a skinny minute. Now.

Friend had a $599 offer on PVG-LAX from a T fare. Obviously he accepted as it was a ridiculously low buy up amount from a $500RT ticket!

I think I know but worth asking...

Iím booked ORD to BRU in economy plus for an upcoming trip. Current cash upgrade for that leg is ~$8,200. Miles + points is $550 + 20,000.

Is that about as good as itís going to get?

First Class sold 6/12.

My wife had a better offer than yours today on a DCA-ORD flight. It was the same price as for the ORD-DCA a few days ago: $139 but this time it was starting from an H fare. First Class sold 14 (+1 blocked)/16. She did not take the offer as it was a refreshments only flight and she thought a tapas box was better than 2 chips bags.

Flight was oversold in Economy (at check-in she got asked at what price she would relinquish her seat for a later flight) and even though it was not oversold in First Class, I was also asked at what price I would relinquish my seat. We did not take that option even though we could have taken any of the next two DCA-ORD flights and still make our connecting flight home.

It may come down, it may sell out. It depends on how future cash sales of business goes.

That will not change and it may or may not clear.

Upgrades for BRU can be a decent possibility mid-week

CDG-IAD today, flight was booked to 47 or 48 out of 50 for the last 5 days. Upgrade offer 5 days ago was >$7,000, yesterday it was just over $3,000, and 2 hours before departure it was $819. There went my chance of an upgrade. The ride in Premium Plus was reasonably good, I liked the seat although the service was bare minimum.
