840 SYD-LAX Cancelled Sunday Oct 15, 2017

Mechanical.

Initially delayed two hours but now cancelled, which may explain the comment I wrote below:

Interestingly, but by no means 100% accurate, the seat map of 870 to SFO did not show every seat as occupied.

10/19: UA893 744 (N180UA) SFO-ICN suffered a bird strike shortly after departure and had to return to SFO. A replacement aircraft (N121UA) eventually operated the flight arriving 6 hours 17 minutes late. This caused:

10/20: UA892 744 ICN-SFO is estimated 4 hours 45 minutes late due to late inbound aircraft.

Apparently it also caused the ultimate cancellation of 10/19 UA901 SFO-LHR which was already delayed due to the PA system needing to be fixed. Whether the following story is true who knows but I had boarded along with others in group 1, and we were sitting there for approx 20 minutes when we were told to deplane. Speaking to the FA they said this crew (UA901) was being pulled of this flight to fly the Seoul one and we would get a replacement crew. Off we toddled back to the boarding area where they could not find a replacement 747 pilot (had 2, needed 3 they said) immediately. They found one in Sacramento who would then have to get to SFO in rush hour (it was about 3.30pm now) and all of a sudden the estimated departure time jumped from 3.30pm to 7pm.

I had already backed up my flight with UA930 so immediately switched myself as that took off at 735pm as I just had a bad feel about the whole UA901 saga. Turns out UA901 was ultimately cancelled which did not surprise me as it was from gate 93 and as I walked to gate 100 it had not boarded and should have done. I saw that it had been cancelled when I landed. There were a lot of people with connections too judging by the amount that went to the desk when the agent said "come to the desk if you have a connection" and a lot of unhappiness with United it felt like. I was suprised that more people did not try and get on UA930 as that left nowhere near full. Not sure what sort of compensation those people will get.

Dang, I came in on the ICN flight, I'm glad I didn't fly a day later!

SFO in general was an absolute mess yesterday, my flight out was delayed significantly as well as were many, many others.

$500 for a GS booked in J. That might seem good, but right now I'm sitting in Houston waiting for a LHR flight a day later. My day is worth more than $500.

Yeah that sucks. I don't think that United would have protected me so was glad I did it myself. UA930 had approximately 140 spare seats.

There is a reason UA is phasing out the 747's, as cancellation rates show the maintenance is minimal. We will all miss them in a few weeks.

In general, as soon as a flight goes irrop I ask for a reservation on the next. Nothing to see here folks move on ahahaha

Any indication it was the A/C or more related to Typhoon Lan?

Neither. My educated guess is long "operational issues" delays are actually crew issues. Either they won't have a crew until 20 hours or the crew they do have needs their required rest which will be up in 20 hours.

If it were aircraft related the delay reason is almost always "maintenance" and if it is typhoon related it should be "severe weather conditions in our network".

Crew availability according to a friend on the flight. It seems any time that route is 3 or more hours late it throws that crew off and there's a significant delay the next day.
