Changing Credit Card Payment for Flights Booked in last 24 hours

Damn! Just bought $5000 worth of tickets at great prices but UA.com didn't by default use my Mileage Plus CC but another.

I want to change the payment to the Mileage Plus CC to get the miles and travel insurance.

It's been 12 hours. Is there anyway to change the credit card the flights were booked on without cancelling the flights.

Fee free cancelations within 24 hours.

So cancel and rebook. Actually, rebook first to ensure you get the fares, then cancel the initial bookings. As long as the fare is still there, it's by far the easiest way.

You can try and call, however, it's likely a long argument, and a losing one for you.

Are you sure they didn't cancel and rebook? I called up and they said they can't transfer CC payments

Given the general state of the UA systems, it is entirely possible that the CC hadn't been charged (if it was only 1 hr after booking) so they were able to make the change prior to the reservation being actually invoiced.

Forget about UA systems - most places won't change the payment method once its been charged. I had Wayfair do it for me a few weeks ago (placed original order several hours before my CSR card arrived, but they are really top-notch customer service anyways). But this is most definitely not the norm - issue I'd guess is that most systems aren't designed to do this - they can take payments, or refund them, but not much inbetween. Perhaps new modern systems have this kind of option, but I wouldn't call most airline systems 'modern' by any stretch. I am on PayPal as a small business as a merchant, and I don't believe there is a way for me to do that, either.

Also, UA systems (on the ground anyway, iPhones in the air are different) are very good at charging cards immediately. I don't think I've had a time that I can remember in many, many years where a ticket doesn't show up as a pending charge right away. My guess is it may be possible, if it is at all, between ticket purchase and ticket issue, but typically that window is quite small - a few minutes for all UA/UAX operated itineraries.

I don't think this generalization is true at all. While I don't make a habit of it some of the places I have changed credit cards after payment was taken at over the years include:
  • Hotels
  • Car Rental
  • Amazon
  • Target

OP, just rebook first, then cancel old reservation. Don't waste time on phone.

I called the premier desk and the first time they said, "no". But the second time they said they could do it as an exception. They cancelled my original reservation but said they would honor the price and they did. It took well over an hour on hold but they did it!

I am trying to place a booking with R bucket availbilty, I am receiving my new CC tomorrow which I would like to use for this booking. The fare cant be hold as dep. date is too close ( dec 27th ) any chance I can put it on a different card then change the payment method within 24h?

See the posts earlier in this thread, moved it here because of this OPs success. My guess is there is no definitive answer to this, YMMV

Update: I found this thread because I want to change the card on a ticket purchased last night (within the 24 hour cancellation period). First agent to pick up was willing to do it without any hesitation. As noted above, the agent had to create a new reservation, process the payment from the desired card and then cancel and refund the existing ticket. Was no problem as the same fare buckets were available. At one point as she was going step by step through the process she brought up that since this was a new booking the $25 phone fee would apply. However, she readily agreed with me as soon as I said it's not "really" a new booking and did whatever she needed to do to have the fee waived. In the end, it took about 15 minutes to accomplish after roughly 15 minutes waiting for a CSR. Note that new ticket and confirmation numbers will be issued.

a month or two ago, I tried to change the card on a ticket I had booked just a few hours before. Same fare no longer available, and it was well within 24. I expected a flat no, but agent said it shouldnít be a problem, but then when she realized the payment was partially made with TravelBank funds, she said it couldnít be done - could only be done if the only form of payment was the card. Never mentioned anything about a new reservation, but I donít think it involved that since it was going to be the same price and not the current price which was more.

I was able to successfully change CC payment to my Explorer card. I purchased the flight ticket yesterday but was outside the 24 hour window. United purchased the same ticket with the Explorer card for me over the phone, honoring the old fare (even though the fare increased today). Then they fully refunded the fare bought with the original CC. Really great customer service. If it was within 24hrs I would have just cancelled and rebooked myself online/on my app.
