OZ (Asiana) award booking experiences, blackout dates. seat assignments, ...

I redeemed United miles for a trip on Asiana.

Does anyone know if you can pick your seat on Asiana even though you got the ticket through United as an award?

I'm United Gold, the ticket is economy. I have no status with Asiana.

If yes, when can I pick the seat? 24hr before flight? at checkin?

I just did it for a reservation in Biz next Feb, but I had to call UA to get the Asiana locator number because it didn't show up. Once I got it I was able to use the link mentioned in this wiki:

am in a similar boat - i booked an award business ticket for May of 2016. the online system didn't seem to allow me to reserve seats.

when i called Asiana and gave them their specific locator number, they said because it was too far in advance to book seats and to try calling back in about a month or so. they seemed quite nice about it, so will check again in a few weeks (both online and via phone).

Perfect! Just what I was hoping for. Than you very much.

*A partner award availability

I was able to book a saver award on OZ biz from JFK to ICN for December. I would like to connect to the flight a few hours later Asiana has to MNL from ICN. UA Agent told me that this flight does not show up for them to book, even on other days.

Is this correct, and it's never going to be bookable, or can I push them to book it for me within the same ticket?

sbm12 Aug 2, 2015 6:14 pm

They can only book you on it if there is award space open. And OZ controls that. If there's no award space then UA cannot do anything to make it show up.

If the award space shows up the agents should be able to change your existing award (subject to fees based on your status at the time the change happens) but until that time there's nothing to "push" the agents on.

UA does not allow OZ awards to be booked from the US to SE Asia over Christmas / New Year's. Here is the applicable text from the fare rules from a sample AUS/MNL award booking:

FARE BY RULE TEXT
IF THE FARE COMPONENT INCLUDES TRAVEL BETWEEN THE UNITED
STATES AND AREA 3 ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
ANY OZ FLIGHT
OR
IF THE FARE COMPONENT INCLUDES TRAVEL BETWEEN AREA 2 AND
AREA 3 ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
ANY OZ FLIGHT
OR
IF THE FARE COMPONENT INCLUDES TRAVEL WITHIN AREA 3 ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
ANY OZ FLIGHT

FROM THE UNITED STATES -
TRAVEL IS NOT PERMITTED 16MAY 15 THROUGH 05JUL 15 OR
17JUL 15 THROUGH 24AUG 15 OR 24SEP 15 THROUGH
30SEP 15 OR 08OCT 15 THROUGH 11OCT 15 OR 05DEC 15
THROUGH 31DEC 15 OR 01JAN 16 THROUGH 10JAN 16 OR
05FEB 16 THROUGH 10FEB 16 OR 14MAY 16 THROUGH
03JUL 16 OR 16JUL 16 THROUGH 28AUG 16 OR 09SEP 16
THROUGH 19SEP 16 OR 30SEP 16 THROUGH 04OCT 16 OR
05DEC 16 THROUGH 31DEC 16.
TO THE UNITED STATES -
TRAVEL IS NOT PERMITTED 22MAY 15 THROUGH 25MAY 15 OR
17JUL 15 THROUGH 24AUG 15 OR 24SEP 15 THROUGH
30SEP 15 OR 08OCT 15 THROUGH 11OCT 15 OR 24DEC 15
THROUGH 31DEC 15 OR 01JAN 16 THROUGH 10JAN 16 OR
05FEB 16 THROUGH 10FEB 16 OR 03JUN 16 THROUGH
06JUN 16 OR 16JUL 16 THROUGH 28AUG 16 OR 09SEP 16
THROUGH 19SEP 16 OR 30SEP 16 THROUGH 04OCT 16 OR
24DEC 16 THROUGH 31DEC 16.
(You can see these rules yourself during the award booking process -- there's a link to the fare rules on the confirmation page).

Sorry, but no amount of HUACA is likely to work in this case. :(

The OP already has JFK-ICN booked for the desired date so those blackout dates are not so strict, it would seem. @:-)

That's correct - I have the ticket to ICN booked for the 25th - just wanted to add a leg.

I think the issue is those are not the actual blackout dates in the UA fare rules ;)

From the Americas, the blackout ends 12/23. Asiana Award Chart.

UA gets it wrong again!

The blackout dates are different intra-Asia. You're SOL on that one.

It appears that UA has different blackout dates for ICN specifically. Here's the text from fare CSM/AB77, a C award fare from a dummy booking:

FARE BY RULE TEXT
IF THE FARE COMPONENT INCLUDES TRAVEL BETWEEN THE UNITED
STATES AND SEL ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
ANY OZ FLIGHT
OR
IF THE FARE COMPONENT INCLUDES TRAVEL BETWEEN AREA 2 AND
AREA 3 ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
ANY OZ FLIGHT
OR
IF THE FARE COMPONENT INCLUDES TRAVEL WITHIN AREA 3 ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
ANY OZ FLIGHT
FROM THE UNITED STATES -
TRAVEL IS NOT PERMITTED 16MAY 15 THROUGH 05JUL 15 OR
05DEC 15 THROUGH 23DEC 15 OR 14MAY 16 THROUGH
03JUL 16 OR 05DEC 16 THROUGH 23DEC 16.
TO THE UNITED STATES -
TRAVEL IS NOT PERMITTED 23JUL 15 THROUGH 24AUG 15 OR
24SEP 15 THROUGH 30SEP 15 OR 24DEC 15 THROUGH
31DEC 15 OR 01JAN 16 THROUGH 10JAN 16 OR 05FEB 16
THROUGH 09FEB 16 OR 16JUL 16 THROUGH 21AUG 16 OR
09SEP 16 THROUGH 16SEP 16 OR 24DEC 16 THROUGH
31DEC 16.
These do appear to match the Asiana chart.

So, you can go to ICN on OZ between Christmas and New Year's, but you can't go to MNL (the destination I used for the first dummy booking I posted, fare CSM/AB73). It appears that someone at UA combined the two blackout date categories, since one of your OZ flights would be departing from the Americas and one would not. I have no idea whether or not that was Asiana's intention, but that's what UA did.

You should probably highlight the 2015 rules since that's what's being discussed. @:-) ;)

erik123 Aug 3, 2015 12:53 pm

Air Asia has a flight MNL-ICN and Cebu Pacific also - So those might be worth a look.
