Not to be pedantic, but SFO-HKG is longer by about 400nm than SFO-AKL.

I'm genuinely curious as to why. You prefer the smaller, more claustrophobic cabin of the A350? Or it could be the prospect of 10 across in Y on the 77W, which I admit is a valid concern!

I hope IAD gets A350's, old 777s and 767s. Leave the 77W and 787 and 10 across in Y for other hubs.

9 abreast A350 is wider seats than 9 on the 787 or 10 on the 777.

However J is going to be a squeeze if they just blindly use the 777 product.

Actually this is probably incorrect. Seat manufacturers typically design J seats for certain widebody models. For example, a J product for a 787 will be designed to have the same width as the A330. Hence, the aisle on the 787 might seem a little wider. The same goes for the A350/777. Just look at what DL will be installing when they refit the 777s, the exact same product as their new A350s. Its quite efficient for manufacturers to have a product for the 787/A330 and A350/777. The 767 is outmoded, so seat selection is difficult if an airline chooses for all aisle access. UA's 767 Polaris product will be totally unique in this regard. In fact, Polaris on the 767 might very well be the best J product on the 767.

As relatively low-yield routes, I'd be surprised if that's the case. Business fares return on these routes are regularly < $4k - lots of VFR traffic

Its been all but confirmed EWR-DEL/BOM will become 77W routes. The 77W will have better performance on these routes than the GE 772s. The 77W is a much better aircraft given it can carry a hundred more pax than the 772 while only burning slightly more fuel than the 772. Also helps the 77W has more range than the 772, giving it an edge on these ULH routes.

Your opinion doesn't reflect real-world seating practices by contemporaneous A350 and 777 operators.

CX: Not the same size
SQ: Not the same size
QR: Not the same size

Thats because they are using differently products on SQ/QR and CX slightly enhanced their seat on the A350.

Even using "the same product" it's common to have multiple widths to make the most of each aircraft.

No doubt 777 Polaris will require a few nips and tucks to get the dimensions right for the A350, but I'm not sure how wide the 777 aisles will be in J... I would imagine that's the first place they'd look to 'buy back' some space.

Why is this? I'm not doubting this is true; I'm just curious why. Equipment/gates? Routes not popular?

ORD won't see the 77W at all. They will fly ULH out of EWR & SFO.

My guess is this is more of a function of corporate real estate. ORD T1 lounges are undergoing a phased renovation, and Polaris is part of the new brand standard for international gateways, so it makes sense to do the project now with the other upgrades.
