SFO-HKG can be almost 14 hours flight time in the winter. It's currently serviced by a 744, which has similar range to the 77W. The other airlines flying the route (CX and SQ) also use 77Ws on it.

Of course, as an SFO-based flyer who typically flies in Y, I hope that SFO gets lots of A35Ks and virtually no B77Ws. Unfortunately I doubt that is realistic.

Years from now, I suspect SFO-HKG will see the A35J as all 77Ws will eventually be EWR based.

Offer was ~$1750 for K --> GF (my original K fare was deeply discounted as well - effective cost one-way was <$300). I didn't take it, but it probably is a pretty good price outright.

Rumored first intl routes I'm hearing are EWR-HKG & SFO-AKL.
They need that much more capacity on AKL?

Any chance they will test these on EWR-SFO/LAX ps routes in December before deploying them on the long haul routes?

I would have to agree on the locations that have Polaris Lounges as the logical choice for the 1st flights.

I had the same offer last year on a S fare to GF on a 3 class 763 flight EWR-LHR.

Well, more Y competing for those seats.

And to follow-on post, while current pmUA have 8GF, those seats are potentially available to BF upgraders, which opens up BF space for Y upgraders (of course, not always . . . )

A chance, but nothing for certain. As mentioned up-thread, shorter hub-hub routes would allow more cycles to get everyone trained up.

First Polaris lounge will be ORD, which will not see the 773 for quite some time.

But that's not what typically happen. GF goes to non-revs. At least that's what I've been seeing on all my TPACs lately - e.g., 10/12 GF seats on a 744 go to nonrevs at the gate. It's pretty clear why UA is shutting down GF . . . they're not getting consistent marginal revenue from it.

But it is amazing how little they have down since the merger to monetize the cabin, apart from the recent move to turn it into additional J seats.

I could never understand why they would not allow upgrades on discount business fares with a co-pay. I have to fly the cheapest business class available which usually means not upgrade eligible. So to use my GPUs I book Y and upgrade to J....

Oh I completely agree. Not saying it couldn't be profitable, but the way UA has managed it, the seats are mostly going to non-revs these days.

Business class on flights to NZ is generally quite expensive, there's not a huge amount of competition, and Air NZ is well respected/has a decent business class. I think I can fully understand why UA would operate Polaris on SFO-AKL - although using the 772 around Christmas might not help their reputation in the short term (not that the 787 holds up that well in comparison to NZ either)?
