Unacceptable equipment change. 4-across with direct aisle access to 8-across without.
UA does list "changes to type of aircraft" as a type of schedule change per https://www.united.com/web/en-US/con...le-change.aspx.
Though it's not a change to the arrival or departure time, it is a schedule change that could be unacceptable to a passenger.

Anyone know why UA 889 (PEK - SFO) is showing as a 772 next Saturday (12/2) instead of a 77W?

A little bit late to the conversation, seems like EWR/SFO is now dead for the 77W. I guess the aircraft are flying SFO-NRT-EWR-NRT-SFO now, so they're exclusively reserved for international routes.
I presume EWR-HKG will get the new 77W. This route seems to be weight restricted due to the smaller 772ER operating the route right now. I hope EWR-PEK also gets the 77W, as the current market between the U.S. and China seems very prospecting.

As a 772 captain once said to me on this flight, "We nearly always run out of water and come close to running out of fuel. Thankfully, not the other way around."

The weight restriction referral is for the pmCO 777-200ER, not the new 777-300ER (77W). When there are strong headwinds EWR-HKG (and other similar VLR flights), the 772 is loaded with less freight and occasionally fewer passengers so it can avoid doing a fuel stop enroute. On rare occasion, the winds are stronger than forecast and a tech stop for fuel is required.
