On what grounds would the change be?

Unacceptable equipment change. 4-across with direct aisle access to 8-across without.

UA does list "changes to type of aircraft" as a type of schedule change per https://www.united.com/web/en-US/con...le-change.aspx.

Though it's not a change to the arrival or departure time, it is a schedule change that could be unacceptable to a passenger.

And this link also says from/to airports must be the same and on UA. The poster was asking about getting on NH/OZ or a different route.

Anyone know why UA 889 (PEK - SFO) is showing as a 772 next Saturday (12/2) instead of a 77W?

They've swapped in the 772 for about six weeks. See the Wiki.

According to Airlineroute:
United switching from 777-300ER to -200ER for Newark – Tokyo Narita route from 01AUG18. Further changes likely

A little bit late to the conversation, seems like EWR/SFO is now dead for the 77W. I guess the aircraft are flying SFO-NRT-EWR-NRT-SFO now, so they're exclusively reserved for international routes.
I presume EWR-HKG will get the new 77W. This route seems to be weight restricted due to the smaller 772ER operating the route right now. I hope EWR-PEK also gets the 77W, as the current market between the U.S. and China seems very prospecting.

The plane actually goes to TLV, and does a SFO-NRT-EWR-TLV-EWR-NRT-SFO. Although I wonder for the Aug 2018 period, how they will get the 77W to fly EWR-TLV without the NRT-EWR segment.

Thats surprising - I would think they should be able to fill the seats on this route with the bigger plane...guess not?...

Maybe they have other routes needing the planes even more.

There shouldn't be any weight restrictions with 77W. CX flies 3 daily HKG-JFK with 77W. But I would also like to know about any restrictions.

The 77Ws on EWR/SFO seem to have been initial "break-in" flights. If so, they may come back when the remaining 4 77Ws join the fleet in late 2018.

The weight restriction referral is for the pmCO 777-200ER, not the new 777-300ER (77W). When there are strong headwinds EWR-HKG (and other similar VLR flights), the 772 is loaded with less freight and occasionally fewer passengers so it can avoid doing a fuel stop enroute. On rare occasion, the winds are stronger than forecast and a tech stop for fuel is required.

As a 772 captain once said to me on this flight, "We nearly always run out of water and come close to running out of fuel. Thankfully, not the other way around."

Isn't it also true that during some hot summer months, the departure time of EWR-HKG is delayed to compensate for those shortcomings? I recall on some really hot days, it was pushed to the evening hours...
